Chicken is best to start with, because it is tolerated well by most cats, most cats like the flavour as it's quite mild, it's easy to get hold of, and it contains small bones that can be eaten.

Once you start a proper raw diet you will want to rotate the types of meat you feed, and then you can give pretty much anything, including kangaroo, beef, lamb, pork, ostrich, frog, mice, rats, rabbit, turkey, duck, buffalo, etc. etc.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!

Re: Urgent help needed! Advice please!

Hi

I owe you an update!

Well, as I was going to bed last night, I was in the bathroom brushing my teeth and happened to catch a glimpse of my wee boy using the toliet - low and behold his poo was firm!

What the?

So, he seems to be over his loose poo phase!?

So, I decided to cancel the vet trip [seeing as it's such drama].

I have moved them on to raw meat.

Turns out its easy to get in China, and cheap! The same price as those awful whiskas pouches! Wow!

So today they they had some beef [a nice prime cut too!!] mixed with heart and kidney, and some chicken breast mixed with heart and kidney.

They ate the beef mixture as their first meal, and had no problems.

With the chicken meal they refused to eat the organs...??

Anyway, I have a new problem/challenge/question.

Just today, since they started the raw meat diet, my wee girl is attacking the boy when he tries to eat!?

I separated their food into separate dishes and that ensured they both got eats, but I'm really confused about this.

Why has this happened now? Also, the girl is very very placid normally, why would this situation make her get bossy?

With the dry food and whiskas pouches they were happy to eat together...............??

This question probably belongs in the behaviour section, but any answers would be great.

As a special treat to say thanks for you help I'm going to post a couple of pictures in the next few days for you! Actually I have an alterior motive - I'm want to get some help identifying the colour of my Lynx point boy. Stay tuned!

Thanks so much all!

So glad to hear the little boy is doing better

The raw meat diet can sometimes bring out the cat's prey/hunting instincts, this may be why your little girl has started attacking. It may be worth feeding them in two separate rooms for now.

Fantastic that they liked the meat! Sometimes they can get a bit finicky about the organs - it may help if you cut them very, very finely so that it covers the pieces of meat rather than being a chunk on its own.

When you buy meat, try to find meat with as much fat on as possible - the cheaper cuts of meat are better for cats, for example chicken legs with the skin on are better than chicken breast with no skin.

You're so lucky you've found heart - it's the best meat to feed (it's not counted as an organ so you can feed as much as you like of it) because it contains so much taurine, which is essential for the cats.

Next to do is to get them to eat bones, because this gives them calcium that they need to grow their own bones.. I wouldn't let them go more than two weeks without eating bones. Get a tiny chicken wing and let them have a go You may need to cut into it a little, or bash it up for them at first. If they don't understand what to do with it, just keep trying every day. They'll get there in the end! Meanwhile, you can add a tiny bit of finely ground eggshells to their food - this will provide the calcium they need until they start eating the bones.

Good luck and I look forward to those pictures!

Your female cat obviously really likes her food. Sometimes one of mine will growl at the other if he thinks he may eat some of his favourite food. Just say 'No' and keep them a distance apart while they eat and supervise.

And yes, I would take your boy to the vet to make sure - just don't listen to the vet if he/she tries to get you to buy any dry cat food!
I dont think telling her not to listen to her vet is a good idea. Whilst I dont agree with you about dry food as it develops their teeth I also agree that maybe it isnt AS healthy as it should be. But NEVER advice someone to go against their vets direction, as the kitten may need this for a reason.

I strongly advise maybe giving your a vet a telephone call and explaining the situation and more professional help can be give

Coraline may I ask why dry is bad for them im intrigued!!! My Alfie loves it!

What Coraline said was don't listen to the vet if they start to recommend dry cat food. And the original post said that they were in China, getting to a vets may be difficult as pets are not that common.

What is wrong with dry food for cats?

Firstly cats are desert creatures and have evolved to get most of their water requirements from the prey that they eat. Dry food goes against this evolutionary development and forces cats to dry lots of water. This places too much load on most cats kidneys and results in kidney and urinary tract issues in later life. Dry food manufacturers put chemicals in the food to reduce the impact of this, chemicals that are banned from human foodstuffs due to health concerns.

But cats are not wild animals? - Whilst this is true their digestive system is no different from wild cats and you don't see many zoos feeding the wild cats dry food!

Most dry foods are loaded with carbohydrates in the form of grains / rice etc. which cats, being carnivores, are not designed to eat. Cats need meat and meat protein to survive. Carbohydrates in carnivores cause obeisity.

But my cat lived to 18 and was fed junk food - A friend of mine's grandma lived to 93, smoked cigarettes and drank whisky everyday.

Vets are not nutrionists, they are generalists. They go to vet school for 7 years and study a wide range of animals, diseases etc. but only spend a very short time studying nutrition and an even shorter time studying cat and dog nutrition. The cat and dog nutrition semninars is usually provided or sponsored by the large dry food manufacturers.

Dry food does not keep teeth clean as the manufacturers would like you to believe. It is just a marketing gimmick to pursuad you to choose dry over wet. Dry food does compact between the teeth and is difficult for a cat to remove, unlike wet food. This is why there is an increase in dental trips to the vets and the rise of dental brushes, toothpaste and chews for dogs and cats.

Remember pet food is manufacturerd for profit and most of the large manufacturers started out because they had human food processing plants and they wanted a way of getting rid of their waste. Whilst there are good laws in the UK and EU around what meat can go into pet food anything else is fair game. A lot of the addatives that still goes into pet food have been banned for human food. Quality still suffers over making a fast buck.

Vets are on commision to sell you the food that they stock. They make at least 30% profit on each bag.

Re: Urgent help needed! Advice please!

Hi,

Sorry i didnt read it right. I guess every owner to themselves really. I feed Alfie and Millie on Whiskers Dry and Iams. And Whiskers Meat in gravy. I always leave dry down for them and they get half a pouch each in the morning and same in the evening. It seems to work. *They get so little wet as they are so young* Plus i give them fresh meat and fish.

I find this works for them, and me. If i could afford it I would LOVE to feed them Royal Canine.
