Heartbroken

Hi there,I just wanted to see if anyone else has lost a kitten to this?
I had to put my beloved 4mth old boy Marty to sleep last monday morning.
He had stopped eating & drinking for a day,so I took him to the vet on wednesday.A Locum vet gave him an injection for his high temperature & sent us off.On friday morning he vomited & still was very lethargic so I took him back to the vet.She did the same thing & although I asked if there wasn,t anything else he could get ..she was happy to let us go.He was still off colour on Saturday but drinking a lot of water. On sunday he would not eat & by late evening I was getting frantic. He did mange to crawl up onto his favourite place ..me...but he became very slumped & couldnt lift his head.I freaked & lifted him over to the water bowl where he collapsed at a horrendous angle & began crying dreadfully.I rushed him to the Emergency vet stroking him all the way.He looked dreadful & was unable to move. The vet examined him & mentioned my worst fear...possible wet FIP.I had noticed his abdomen was swollen & the vet then pointed out that he was jaundiced under his fur.He put Marty on a drip & said he would call me with the test results in the morning.I hadnt even got home when he called to say that Marty was in Renal failure, had Hepatis, was hypothermic & his tummy was full of straw coloured fluid. He read out all the results which were hundreds over the normal score. His white blood cell count showed his little body was fighting a devastating virus. At 2.10am he was put to sleep.I am devastated.

How very very sad for you, especially as you baby ws so young, take comfort that you did every thing you could to keep him here, it was just not to be.

Back to your original question - I have nursed a young dog with renal failure, caused due to high doses of medication - so unlike you - it was half expected .

RIP little kitty
And welcome to the forum yourself - may you find a little comfort here.
regards
DT

Re: Heartbroken

I cannot believe how quickly he deteriorated.I am now questioning whether I am to blame.I have four other cats who are between 1 year & two years old.I only got Marty on Feb 2nd when he was 7 wks.I got him vaccinated & neutered very shortly afterwards.
I have read that a stresser such as vccs/neuter all at once can trigger dormant FIP.
However what I am most worried is that about 4 wks ago one of my other cats had bad diahorea which cleared up quickly.Although I was fastidious about the litter trays ,I work during the day & feel that perhaps the cat that had the runs maybe had & got over FIP but passed it to Marty.
The other thing is that I got him via Preloved.co.uk & the man I bought him from (with all bowls toys, beds etc) told me when I texted him ,that he got himfroma woman in Coventry....Why would such a young & tiny kitten be passed on twice ?
He was simply THE most affectionate & loving boy I don't know how I'll get over how he died like this. The only consolation is that he wasnt in pain & I got tokiss him & tell him how mush I loved him & what a special boy he was.He was listening to me & purring as he passed.
I feel so sorry for anyone who loses a pet in such circumstances.I just wish it could have been avoided.Has anyone else had this terrible experience ?

Re: Heartbroken

Sadly not of us can comment as to whether the vaccinations were contibutury of this, but do doubt that they were! I am probably one of the most 'anti' vac animal owners, not that I disagree with vac, just don't feel that enough precautions are taken, and that often our pets are over vaccination. - you were not the cause of this - you did all you could

Re: Heartbroken

I'm so sorry for the sad loss of your little kitten I am positive that you did all you could for him and cannot blame yourself for his death. It does seem strange that he was bought and sold on again so young but whether not that was a factor in his ill health I cannot say. I have lost pets over the years but never to such a terrible illness. My thoughts are with you xxx
RIP little Marty x

Re: Heartbroken

Thanks so much to all who sent me such kind words.I read a lot about FIP yesterday which made me realise that he would.nt have recovered poor baby.

I have made the HUGE mistake of going onto Preloved today & there is a tiny kitten who is very similar to Marty !!! I guess I have to wait to see if the results definately show FIP as I may have to wait a few weeks to get another kitten.
Does anyone else have 5 cats without problems? I am really worried as I have read that overcrowding can be a factor in FIP.I have a very large one bed flat overlooking lawns & a lily pond where my cats go out to daily...
Maybe I have just been unlucky ?
