I'm quite anti vacc too, my grandmother has had a history of stray animals turning up on her doorstep bless, she's a proper Dr Doolittle, she won't vaccine any more though or donate to RSPCA (because she found out about their policies on putting animals to sleep). She had a cat vaccinned against feline AIDS & it died not long after of the same thing, she also had a cat vaccinned against Leukaemia, it died not long after, of the same thing.

I don't disagree with vaccinnes but I do think perhaps vets should check first before vaccinating just to make sure they haven't already had it. Doctors do it for us so why not for animals?

I feel for you, I so do & you did do all you could. Chin up hun, you're not at fault.

Re: Heartbroken

Thanks for this x
I have read also that having a kitten vaccinated & neutered at the same time has been too mush stress for a yopung kitten & this can trigger any dormant FIP then the virus can attack 2-4 wks later.Marty has his 2nd vaccs/neuter 6 weeks ago.Maybe I was too quick to get him neutered at 8 weeks...
All my other cats wer done at around 12weeks...

Re: Heartbroken

Hi,

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. It is terrible to lose a pet so young and so quickly like that.

I am sure you did everything in your power to help the little guy but once the FIP virus kicks in there is absolutely nothing you can do to stop the inevitable.

Our thoughts are with you at this terrible time.

Izzie

Re: Heartbroken

I am very sorry for your loss - and yes I have lost kittens to this, both the wet form and the dry form.

Getting a kitten neutered so soon after moving house was not a good idea and I am surprised your vet didn't warn you about that - it's not as if there was any hurry. This isn't your fault though, you were not to know, and if the kitten had been corona-negative this would not have happened anyway.

You could try to get your existing cats down to zero titre before introducing another but you can't guarantee that any kitten you introduce will not be corona positive. If it were me, I would go ahead and get another, but just think this time about minimising stress.

Hi Liz,thanks very much for this;you are obviously extremely knowlegable about this.I got the results from the Vet on friday who said the results were consistent with FIP.She said, like yourself only to get a kitten that had a zero titre result.Also.she said I have to wait SIX MONTHS to get another kitten!!!! How do you reccomend I get my cats down to a zero titre reading...keep them calm & stress free ? Also ,can I only find out their reading by taking them to the vet?
I got another invoice from the Vets for 70 pounds as they said they did not charge me for it.So in 5 days it cost me five hundred pounds & that is before cremation !! Its ironic as Marty was the only cat I did'nt have insured.

I have seen a gorgous kitten avaliable locally but think I an condemning
it & my other cats to possible death.........
What do you think

Re: Heartbroken

I need to be knowledgeable about it, I had an almost total breeding line wipeout once which, at the time, was attributed to FIP. With hindssight, it is clear that something other than FIP was involved, though certainly FIP took several kittens. What else was there, I just don't know.

Most breeders do not have a zero titre household and would not attempt to look for a zero titre kitten. The best chance of a zero titre kitten is to get one from a very small breeder - one who has had an accidental litter from a pet cat. Multi-cat households nearly always have a corona titre. Apparently this does reduce in time - yes, by minimising stress. The corona virus is spread through infected faeces - so keep litter tray hygiene good - but FIP is more than that. A cat has to be corona positve to get FIP but most corona positive cats do not get FIP - and the tendency to get it has a genetic component.

Yes, only the vet can test for corona titre.

In short, really there is no reason why this should happen to you again, as long as you minimise stress. Don't go getting a kitten neutered until it has completely settled in, give it longer than you think you need.

Liz

Re: Heartbroken

So sorry to hear about your little kitten.
May he R.I.P.
It sounds like you did all that you could for him. It just wasn't to be.
Last October i lost my cat of 10 years. The vet said she had a virus and gave her an injection and the next day she died before i had time to tell her how much i loved her. I cried for a week and couldn't work.
So i really know what you are going through.
I think another kitten will really help you.
I also bought a silver locket and put a picture of her in it, so she's always with me.
As for having 5 cats, my friend ended up with 10 cats once and she never had any problems.
I have only 3 but would love another one!!
