Help with a light wet food for my senior cat

Hi

I am new here and I have a 9 year old adorable cat called Thelma. We got her from a rescue centre a couple of years ago and she was quite a big cat (6kg). Her weight crept up to 7kg and we took her to the vets who suggested Obesity food. She has been on Royal Canin Obesity pouches for a while now and has just got down to 4.5kg - well done Thelma

We now need to move her on to a Light food (adult or senior is fine) but it has to be wet as she will not touch dry. The vet has suggested Hills Science Adult Light but am struggling to find many places that stock it. Vet said they do pouches but I can't find them - just tins (which would be ok). She has had a Hills Science tin before which was like mush and she would not touch it.

Another issue is cost, the Royal Canin Obesity pouches were expensive and we were hoping to move on to a cheaper Light food if possible.

Does anyone know/use a good light food in a pouch? Any recommendations? She doesn't need to be on Obesity food anymore and we have just run out. Back on normal pouches until I can order an alternative. Tinned would ok aswell.

Any help and advice much appreciated.

Many thanks
dinks

Re: Help with a light wet food for my senior cat

Hi there,

Glad to hear your cat has gone back to normal weight

A great wet food you can use that's sold in a lot of supermarkets is the HiLife pouches. They contain a lot of meat, and no grains - which are bad for cats - she'll need about two of those a day I should think, but see how she gets on with them, and adjust if she starts losing/putting on weight.

Other good wet foods are Bozita and Porta21, but they're only sold online on Zooplus.

None of these are branded light, but because they contain virtually no carbohydrates they won't make her put on weight assuming you don't feed her too much. It's the carbohydrates in the foods (plus overfeeding of course!) that makes them put weight on.

Thank you Coraline. I will look out for the Hilife pouches when I am next in the supermarket. Something we can buy easily would be great as we have been ordering the obesity food over the internet and paying postage.

Hopefully we can find something she likes that keeps her weight down and doesn't make her feel starving!

Thanks
dinks
