Unhappy has my vet over charged me?

i went away for the weekend for my birthday and had a friend checking in my my pets. when i came back i noticed my 10 month kitten had no been home since i came back. i waited 2 days and kept calling her every night until i heard her calling me. when we found her she had cuts all over her legs and tail and then her back leg was floppy.

i imediately took her to the vets at 12 at night so knew this would incure a £100 fee. they told me they would have to do x rays and wait until the morning so they could use the same anaethertic to do surgery if it was needed. but it shsouldnt amount to more than £600. as i did not have insurance but had emergancy money. as i told them this.

i didnt here anything from them then i rang them and they told me it was a fractered femur so would need surgery and her tail might need amputation but they didnt have an anethiatist until the following day. they changed her dressings on her wounds however and gave her painkillers. we thought roughly the damage was done 3 days ago roughly at most.

the day after (2 days after i brought her in) when they said they would do surgery even though it was meant to be done the morning after i brought her in. they told me the anaethetist wasnt in again so would have to wait a following day for the surgery. but gave me a choice to remove her leg or to continure with operation to fix it as it would cost a little bit more but they didnt think there would be any problems and she should heal fine.

all this time iv been asking about costs but have not been told any as they wernt sure yet....

days 4 she finally had surgey and they removed her tail and dont have a clue what they done to her leg. didnt here a thing from the vets until today when i had to ring them again. basiclyy she is still in pain on her leg the operation happned on and they dont think its recovering which will mean more x-rays and more surgery....the bill so far is £850.00. it was £500 up until the first operation! and thats because of all the pain killers etc... but thats because they couldnt provide an aneathatist until 4 days after she was brought in.

does anyone think they have wasited time and money and caused more problems as they have waited 4 days before doing the surgery? and wouldnt it have been kinder to just remove the leg than to cause her this much pain to then have to remove it anyway. knwoing the fact i had no insurance!

and yes i know i should have had insurance but i was itnhe middle of changing insurance companies and well sods law an all!!!!

Re: has my vet over charged me?

i think those cost are fairly standard, even cheap for surgery and four days hospitalizatiion.

would i have waited as a vet to do that surgery? Well if i had thought ur kitty was in shock i may have waited a day or so but 4 days? no way.

Hope your kitty makes a full and healthy recovery.

Genna xxxx

i would ask to see a run down of her bill, they have kept her in because they didnt have the people available all this time, so id argue and say why should you have to pay the over night fees as if they have the people she would have been in and out quicker, also ask why didnt they ring you, I had this problem with a vet when one of mine was bad with blocked bladder they over charged, needless to say i changed vets

Re: has my vet over charged me?

I am not at all suprised.

My cat had a straightforward abcess that required attention on the Saturday of the Bank Holiday.

1 Overnight stay a clean up some antibiotics blood tests a follow up appointment and more bloods and the bill was £450.

I really don't ever remember it costing this much in the past and this was the 3rd cat fight gone bad he has had.

Fortunately we did have Insurance but i thought it was alot of money.

The check up appointment and blood test was £122

Re: has my vet over charged me?

I am sorry to hear about your cat. Thankfully she is still alive, and I hope she makes a full recovery with her leg if possible.

Any kind of surgery is expensive, especially when it comes to orthopedics. They may well have had to set the bones using pins and plates and that would be expensive and probably a very lengthy operation. Plus the hospitalisation, thats probably on a par with a good hotel. Just one xray and an anaesthetic could cost close to £100.

Although animals cope great with 3 legs it would always be best to try and give it a go at saving the injured leg first, and this still may work.

As its quite a large bill, I am sure your vet would let you pay in instalments, most of them understand and will be accomodating. You should ask to see the vet and discuss it with them.

Have you been to see her?

Re: has my vet over charged me?

she wasnt in shock at all when i took her in and they all been raving about how happy she is but to wait four days because they coudlnt provide her with the operation has made me furious and then to charge me all that money for it! even after the operation she has been kept in for another four days because of her dressings. and now its going to look lik eshe is going to have to have the leg removed after all. i mean them waiting so long before doing the surgery, has that resulted in her leg being worse than if they had treated it strait away. thats whats concerning me.

my friends a vet but lives too far away and even she said that not many cats vet bills cost more than £800..... and mines £800 before she is even fixed!

Re: has my vet over charged me?

I would imagine she was in shock. If they estimated that the injury had been incurred 3 days before she had be lying there no food or water in pain for that time until you found her. They would have had to ensure that she was in a suitable condition to undergo a lengthy surgery first.
