Cat Losing Weight!

Hi
My 12 year old ginger tom, Captain Smudge, has been losing weight for a few months now and people are saying, well, he's old, but when I pick him up he feels like a bag of bones and he looks weaker.
I've wormed him so no signs of that.
He is still eating okay too so I am perplexed - scared to take him to vet as he may say he's old put him down.
He's slower than he was a few months ago but can perk up when he wants to!
He seems to improve a lot when he's been lying in the sun.
I'd like to try some nutrition while he's still eating - has anyone any suggestions about food to build strength and weight or any special supplements etc. He has always vomited on rich meats and fish so we have tended to stick to chicken options and biscuits.
He has been eating more "table Food" or what we eat recently which is a shift for him but I don't want him to get into bad habits.
My Thanks and Best Wishes
Vanwinkle

Re: Cat Losing Weight!

I would take him to the vets and have him checked. There are several things they can get as they get older, most of which can be controlled. If your vet says to you he is too old, put him to sleep, then find another vet. 12 yrs is a reasonable age, but its certainly not too old to be given a chance at treatment, considering some cats live to 19, 20 + yrs. Your vet should so a blood work up that will tell them whats going on and what treatments are available.

Some of the things it may be could need a special diet, so its best to get him checked before changing his diet. If he is still enjoying his food, then he still feels quite good in himself so thats a good sign.

I would take him to the vet as it could be something that does need treatment. 12 is not old for a cat and he may only be adjusting to his senior years. A vet will not want to put a cat to sleep just because of age and can't without your permission. Maybe if you ring the vet and talk to them and ask advice.

Re: Cat Losing Weight!

I absolutely agree with the previous advice. My cat lost alot of weight rapidly and after a blood test turned out she had hyperthyroidism. since I started her on medication she is much happier & put on weight and she is 16. I know it can be scary but at least you will know what you are dealing with if you get a test done.

Re: Cat Losing Weight!

My cat, who is 13 years old, just went in for his check up last week, and had lost 2 pounds, and suddenly, his breathing got labored. I got worried, and took him to the emergency animal hosptial. After 2 days in the "ER" he's been diagnosed with a feline heart condition We are going to try medications, and see what happens. The doctor told me that cats are very good at hiding illiness, sometimes until it is too late!! Best thing to do is get him checked out with ex-rays and maybe an ultrasound.
