Sore foot

Hi,

Really hoping for some practical advice here, Sandy broke his leg 7 weeks ago, yesterday the big bandage came off and has been replaced with a smaller one, its the first time I have seen his foot in weeks, it seems very sore looking, maybe the bandage has been rubbing but he is licking it. I am phoning the vet as soon as they open this morning but my question is this, can I soothe it with anything or is it best left alone? He is on antibotics to cover any risk of infection, the dressing can come off in two days but he may have to have a second op as the pins in his leg are rubbing from the inside and have caused a wound!!

Any advice really appreciated, we are both very fraught.

Izzie

Re: Sore foot

Hi Izzie,

Really sorry but can't really offer any advice but I think if it were me I'd leave it well alone. Is he still licking it? It must be the pain from the pins that were left in, in which case there is nothing to be done.

Are yours Vets not open now for advice?

Hiya Biawhiska,

The vets are now telling me they want to take the pins out and they are talking to the hospital this week.Im a little concerned, he seems to be in more pain not less and we are seven weeks on!!

Im not touching his foot at all, it looks awful though. Getting very stressed about it all.

Izzie

Re: Sore foot

I bet you are stressed. Is there nothing they can give him to help his discomfort until they can operate since it's their fault they left pins in to begin with?

Re: Sore foot

Hi Pamela,

Im having a meeting with them Monday, luckily they speak good english which means I don't have the worry of being misunderstood. From what I understand the fix is very good but the pins are rubbing from the inside and this is what is causing the pain. Im starting to think he would have been better with an amputation rather than all this discomfort he is having now.

The bandage comes off tomorrow so maybe that will ease the swelling in his leg. The vets is now closed till Monday morning unless I take him as an emergency tomorrow.

Please don't get upset and stressed about it as you need to be strong for your poor cat. Amputation is forever and i am sure the discomfort will not last too long. Did the vet give you any pain killers for him? I assume the rubbing will be worse if he is too active, could you restrict his activity to hopefully reduce the rubbing for now? Can you just ring the emergency number if you are concerned and upset and talk to someone about your concerns rather than have to take him there?

Hi,

I know I have just tried to stay positive for so long a bit longer won't hurt will it? His foot swelling has gone down, the vet said if the bandage is bothering him to remove it so I have done this, the swelling in the foot has already gone down quite a bit. he seems a lot calmer already.

The vet gave us antibiotics for a week but no pain relief, he seems a bit comfortable which has calmed me down alot too.

Thanks for being so supportive, he is not an overly active cat really, I can't understand how the pins can rub the way they have? these sort of ops are done all the time aren't they? thats not a moan, I just don't understand how this can be a problem, if it was his brother who runs round like a nutter I would understand problems after the op but not Sandy. We have followed the notes to the letter, done everything we should have done really. I really hope that he is near the end of the whole ordeal.

Izzie

I am so pleased you are staying positive and feeling a little calmer. Also pleased that Sandy is a little better, i suppose things affect people and animals in different ways, maybe his leg is still adjusting to having a foreign body in it, or maybe whatever its made of is having an affect on him. If he is on Antibiotics that should sort him out. i am sure he is getting loads of love and cuddles but give him a big hug from Auntie Pamela and i really hope he is better soon.
Take Care xx
