The placenta is supposed to hold oxytocin which is supposed to encourage milk, and prostaglandin helps the uterus to contract back to normal size.
If the cat wants to eat it I allow her to eat it. Cats don't always know best, but in this case I think they do, so with respect, I disagree with removing placentas if a mum is showing interest in eating them.

Perhaps our difference in opinion comes with our different breeds.

Hello again, sorry for the delay, been quite busy.
Lou lou had 4 kittens, all healthy too, 3 are stripe's and one is black, not sure about the sex's yet tho. Ally, which is our middle aged cat has help lou lou by cleaning her and the kittens too, typical ally went straight for the bums and gave them all a good clean which was realing heart warming watching it happen. lou lou is quite happy to leave kittens in spare room and return for feeding and cleaning sessions, her Lump (if you can remember the thread, earlier on, has gone all soft and shrunk, so thats good too.

the reason they eat them is going back to the wild when they were eaten to keep pray away from were the the wild cats had had there young,
I have a couple of girls who eat one maybe two but the other girls leave them for me to dispose of

I also find if they eat two many the end up with the galloping Trots

Now when she ate the placenta, maaan, my guts turned, hearing her crunch into it, all chewy and stuff, yuk! I left the room then, lol.

Two or three placentas provides the cat with nourishment, but it is wise to remove any more as letting the cat eat too many can cause the cat to vomit or cause diarrhea

I have girl who eat a couple of afterbirths!! but I also have girls who don't,
When they eat to many they end up with diarrhea

eating them or not!! maybe Siamese and Orientals are different eh!

Hmm. I've not noticed that happening with my girls. I will have to pay more attention next time.
