lol he is a little devil!

Hiya

I have dry and wet food for Jinxy.
He seems to chop and change what he wants lol.

I put just meat down, so he licked the jelly, then went away. I often put in a few bits of dry food to, which he always eats.

We have been putting dry food down at night time, and it is gone by morning time, so i am assuming he likes it lol.

So i put some dry food down for him, once i cleared away the dryish meat. Patted my thigh and shouted 'jinxy', so he comes running through, looked at it, then meowed then walked away

I put half a sachet of meat ontop of it, then he liked the jelly purring his head off lol, and started eating both the meat and dry food

I swear, i think i need to try and be more in sync of what he is wanting lol!!.

Re: lol he is a little devil!

Hmmm, sounds familiar. What type of wet food are you using?

When i first got mine, i gave them sainsburys own brand (didn't know any better then) & they licked the jelly but left the meat (they obviously knew crap food when they saw it). When i moved onto Felix, they wolfed the whole lot down.

Nowadays, with Hills, Patch eats everything on his plate before looking for more food (he's a little piggy) - Lucky still licks the gravy first & saves the meat until she's ready for it.

Re: lol he is a little devil!

Its Whiskers kitten food (wet food) and Tesco premium crunchies (dry food)

I thought if anything he would not like the tesco dry food, but he seems to like it.

You can't predict these things sometimes. You'd think they wouldn't be fussy eaters but they are worse than children sometimes - & its probably worse when they are kittens (have no experience of kittens). Hope Jinxy grows out of the habit - for your pocket's sake.

Thanks, i agree with them being worse than kids lol!
I have not much experience with kittens either, but i suppose we will just need to play it by ear

Re: lol he is a little devil!

my 2 are like that still! lol

they hate anything with Rabbit or Game in, 1 doesnt like anything fishy. its a nightmare when you buy in packs of 24 cans! always 4 or 8 that arnt really wanted, but they eat it when they are hungry enough!! lol

ive just taken mine off wet food really, one gets it once a day as he loves it, but ive been told a decent dry is much better for them, it makes all their organs work to digest, where as wet is mostly water and goes straight through them so their insides become lazy!
also a good dry helps prevent water infections.
(although mine have never had one even on the wet food)

mine actually like the asda tiger dry food....its a good price and its not bad as it does have 30% protine in....so they get james welbeloved dry twice a day and always asda ones down for them to pig out when they fancy it ive noticed less smelly in their poo too!!

im dredding getting Jazzy on the wet kitten food when these kitts are here though, as ive got some in, and she turns her nose up at it, and Diesel eats instead! but he eats more a less anything, as long as its not rabbit or game

sorry for the babbling essay! lol

I would prefer Jinxy was on the dry food, as like you say, it is not as smelly with the poop, and that is good that the dry food is better for their tummies etc.

I hope you get on fine when the kittens are born awww i have never seen kittens being born, it must be amazing!

Thanks

Re: lol he is a little devil!

I normally try not to talk too much on here about dry food, because I know a lot of people are feeding it to their cats for various reasons and I don't want to upset anyone. However, I can't not comment on the above, as it would be horrible if anyone read this and took their cat off of wet food because of it.

Let me be very clear: There is NO dry cat food that is better than wet food. Whoever told you this did not know enough about cat nutrition, and were wrong. Either trust me on this, or read the (long!) article linked below.

Quote:

Yes, dry food does this - and it's bad for them! A cat is made to eat meat and their digestion really struggles with vegetables, grains, anything that's not meat. A struggling digestive system is not healthy - it's like you eating paper every day because it makes all your organs work to digest it. Bad for the cat, bad for you.

Quote:

Wet food comes in two versions: high and low quality (high quality = 60% meat, no vegetables, grains, etc. Low quality = less than 60% meat, with veg, grains, etc.). Both are better than dry food for the sole reason that they contain more water. Cats are made to get most, if not all, water from their food. When fed a low quality wet food, the cat's digestion will still struggle with digesting the veg/fillers in it, but at least the cat won't be dehydrated (more on consequenses of dehydration below). When fed a high quality wet food, the cat gets enough water and doesn't need to struggle to digest inappropriate food; the cat's digestive system doesn't "become lazy" - it becomes NORMAL.

Quote:

(although mine have never had one even on the wet food)
No, dry food causes water infections. Because dry food contains so little water, the cat normally can't drink enough to make up for the deficit, which then leads to a very concentrated urine, which again leads to infections. Dry food 'for urinary tract health' leads to another type of UTI, but still it's an infection. Wet food helps keep the cat hydrated and the urine concentration at a normal level, thus preventing infections.

Please, if your cat is on wet food do not switch him/her to a dry food - there is no reason do to so and it's definitely not better for them in any way!

The following article explains in great detail why dry cat food is bad for a cat; The Truth About Dry Cat Food from Blakkatz. It's a very long article so here's a summary of the key points the author makes:
  • Dry food is the worst possible food you can feed your cat.
  • Cats can not get the nutrients they need from anything other than meat.
  • A lot of the protein in dry food comes from grains, not meat
  • Dry food does not clean teeth!
  • Although a cat consuming a dry food diet does drink more water than a cat consuming a canned food diet, in the end, when water from all sources is added together — what's in their diet plus what they drink — the cat consumes approximately HALF the amount of water compared with a cat eating canned foods.
  • Dry food taxes the kidneys and increases the risk of kidney failure.
  • Cats are designed to eat meat, not veg or grains. Most of the veg/grains comes out undigested as big, frequent poops. Cats on an appropriate diet have smaller, less frequent poops. For example, my raw fed cat does a poo once every two-three days, it's small and almost smell-free.
  • Dry food can cause IBD.
  • The phrase "natural dry cat food" is an oxymoron. There are an increasing number of "natural" dry cat food manufacturers entering the market. These manufacturers will tell you their food is designed to be exactly like what a cat would eat naturally, just in a dry form. What "dry form" food would a cat ever encounter in the wild? Biscuits leaping across the desert plain? This is the key problem: "in a dry form." Between the addition of grains and removal of water, natural or not, it is not healthy food for your cat.

Re: lol he is a little devil!

Dry food -BAD Good quality wet food or raw - FANTASTIC.

I do have a small quantity of dry (JWB) down every day for mine asthey are use to it - but the great majority of the diet I feed them is the 60% meat stuff or raw. Bones clean teeth not sugar packed dry carbs that just shatter when crunched. Think about a cats diet in the wild - a bird is full of water, it is natural for a cat to get almost all it's water from its meat - it doesn't sit in a wheat field chewing corn and then go to the local watering hole for a pint of water!

Whiskas and Felix wet food are 4% thats 4% only meat. And most of that is 'reclaimed' or reconstituted. The cats eat the jelly and leave the rest cos they know what's good for them. Hi-life and naturesmenu are actually quite good value and I beleive tesco's finest is only £3.60 ish for a box of twelve. About the same price as felix - even Sheba, which is expensive, has 4-8% meat.

I honestly beleive that the rise I personally have seen in renal failure in cats is due to feeding dry. I can't remember it back in my youth when dry wasn't as popular and yet now a lot of my friends cats have real problems and they are all fed dry - those with healthy cats all seem to feed wet.

Well, that's me back off my soap box - sorry if I seemed to preach - upintila few years ago I also only fed dry and now I am vehermently against a solely dry diet. I realsie it is personal choice, but it is good to be informed in those choices.

Also on good quality foods poop no smell!
