Raw food question

Hi, I've read through alot of the raw food threads and had a quick question. Taz is on Iams senior dry food but I would like to supplement her diet with a little raw food as well. Unfortunatly cost is an issue here so ideally I'd like to give her a little bit each day of whatever we happen to be having for tea. Before I try this though I though i'd ask some of you more experienced raw food feeders what is best and what if anything should be avoided. For example say I'm having steak (a rare occasion but just imagine haha) if I trimmed a little bit off and cut it up before cooking would that be ok? Or a little bit of mince before it's cooked? Is there any kind of meat that might make her ill? And how if at all should I prepare raw food for her. Many thanks!

Re: Raw food question

Hi there,

Any raw meat, minced or whole, will be fine. Just cut it up in pieces she can chew, probably quite small if she's only used to eating dry food. You may find that she doesn't like and/or tolerate some meats (my cat won't touch lamb!), if she throws it back up it's best to not feed that again. You could also try giving her some raw bones if you have any, it's good for her teeth.

Good luck!

Re: Raw food question

I've just ordered some of the frozen raw meats from one member's site here and it's been going down very well. So far I'm still on the sample box which is £10, and as I'm giving my two raw only every 1 in 4 meals or so, it is lasting ages.
Today I also fed my senior boy (14) a bit of chicken wing and he had no problems. Chicken wings are very cheap (especially if bought via that link) and I cut into 3 pieces along the joints to make the pieces a bit smaller for him.

To start, I would recommend buying a cheap pack of chicken wings (about £2 usually) from your local supermarket and seeing how your kitty gets on with one of them (If she doesn't get on with it, they are fab on the bbq for us humans!)
If Taz likes, then perhaps think about buying frozen in bulk?

Let us know how she gets on!

Re: Raw food question

Got a box of drumsticks for our own tea (so much nicer in a curry than chicken breast I find ) and I'l put one aside for her and let you know how we get on I have had a look at that website and it does look great. I think I'l see how she gets on with little treats first before I fill the freezer.

Re: Raw food question

Result!! She had been licking it for a good 5 mins but is now tearing it apart with great enthusiasm! Ed and I are delighted! Do you know i'd never even heard of feeding cats a raw diet until I read this forum. Hoping a little bit of raw meat and bones in her diet will help with her teeth as they are quite poor.

Re: Raw food question

Not sure why but I was always told to give the wing no the leg? Maybe someone else might know why?

You can cut the wing into 3 sections to!

Oh thats good! My older boys looked at me like I was crazy! 'mum you havent cooked this' look!

Re: Raw food question

She didn't eat it all, didn't really touch the bone. I will stick to wings in future! She did seem very confused at first. I thought she was just going to lick it! She seemed to get the hang of it after I'd cut a few bits so they were just hanging of it. Has anyone noticed any improvment in their cats teeth after giving a raw diet? She has to go under a general anasthetic next week to have her teeth done and I'd try anything to avoid her having to do that again in future.

Re: Raw food question

My guess with the wing over leg is that the bones are smaller and easier for them to break up.

I was always brought up thinking it was wrong to give cats bones, until I recently learned that it's wrong to give them *cooked* bones. The cooking changes the consistency, making them hard and brittle. They can break into sharp fragments - thus the myth about cats and bones is born!

I fed my almost 6-month old kitten the middle section of a raw chicken wing this evening, and he loved it! And there I was worried his little teeth wouldn't cope. Lol

So glad to hear she liked it!

You may have to crunch the bone for her a little first, to help her get the idea. Also, once she starts actually eating the bone, make sure you don't give it too often as too much can cause constipation. I'd say one wing per week is enough, but of course this depends on the cat. If you see her poos turning white, it's time to cut back on the bone

My cat is 13 months now and has been on raw since he was 4 months. His teeth are still sparkly white, but then I don't know if that's just because he's still young. In addition to bones I also give him some of this every day: ProDen PlaqueOff™ - For Healthier Teeth and Gums

Here he is showing off his teeth
