Cat with CRF, Hyperthiroidism and Hypertension

Hi, my 20 year old burmese has been recently diagnosed with CRF, overactive thyroid and high bloodpressure. She had a bleed in her eye 3 weeks ago and after much money spent at the vet they told us the only thing we could do was put her on a special diet - which she hates! She seemed to return to her normal self - eye sight returned so all was well.

However last night we had to take her to the emergency vet at 3am as she seemed to have developed a problem weeing and was going bonkers in and out of her litter tray with no success - she also had bad upset tummy - the lovely vet looked at her bloods and told us that due to her high urea (23) and creatinine (234) levels her CRF was much more advanced than we had origionally thought - the normal vet told us it was not critical but she seemed to think otherwise and said it was more a case of quality and not quantity of life - she therefore administered a pain killer and antibiotic and she does seem a little better this morning (she thinks it was cystitus). However at her age I dont want to prolong her life if she is in pain - and I was wondering if any of you had any experience of this or if anyone knew how high these blood levels were - as I seem to keep getting conflicting advice.

Sorry for the rambling - I have had very little sleep!

Re: Cat with CRF, Hyperthiroidism and Hypertension

hi,
very sorry ur cat is not feeling too well at the mo.
I am not an expert but my opinionm is although the kidney enzymes are elevated it depends on how ur cat can cope with it. They are not sky high but certainly enough to cause a concern. pos if ur cat has had a bout of cystitis she may not have been drinking as much as she should have hence the resulting bladder infection??
One thing that does concern me is blood testing cats that are hypertensive as if the bp is very high any stress can cause blood vessels to rupture hence the bleed in ur cats eye.
My advice is enjoy ur cat, make every minute count to let her eat what she wants and do what she wants, she obviously has a limited amount of time left so let her enjoy it....u will know when her time is coming to an end, they have a way of just giving u a look, stop eating, drinking etc.
Give her a hug and just live for now x

Sorry can't help you with any advice as i've got no experience of this. Hope the cat is feeling better (as much as can be expected) soon and I hope the time you have left is full of lots of love and snuggles.
