Renal Failure

Hi this is my first post on the forum. My 15 year old cat Ruby was diagnosed last week with renal failure. Have started using Hills KD food, she is quite happy to lick the gravy off but will not touch the meat. She is also on Fortekor tablets. She still likes to go outside regularly but has become a bit more lethargic indoors & she now seems to have hearing difficulties.

Has anyone else come across this situation in their cats with CRF ? Any advice on other foods which I could try?

Re: Renal Failure

Hi,

I'm sorry to hear about your cat. My Merlin had CRF from aged 13 or so and she was very fussy with the food. Did exactly the same thing with the K/D pouches, and I hear that is quite common. Merlin got on much better with the Royal Canin Renal diet, and there are more flavours than just chicken to try!
There are also Hills K/D tins, in 2 different types of chicken! (lol) but they didn't go down very well with us... right after I bought about 100 tins. She was pts 2 months ago and I have some (most) tins left over which there is no point my other cats eating. I have offered to send a couple to people on here who have also had cats diagnosed with CRF. I am happy to do the same for you if you PM me your address.
One other trick is to mix the K/D with something else. Perhaps some coley fish or cooked chicken. It's more important to get her to eat and not lose weight than it is to have them not eat the 'right' kind of food, if that makes sense.

Re: Renal Failure

Thanks for the offer. Unfortunately I doubt that I will need them. Her condition has deteriated during the last few days & unless things improve over the weekend it's just a matter of psyching myself up to take her back the vets.

Re: Renal Failure

Awww I'm really sorry to hear that. Is she eating anything at all? We found that the pre-cooked chicken bits from Tesco (the value range) was the only thing Merlin would eat, and it got her to perk up quite a bit on days when we thought 'this is it'.
But then, when it's 'time', you will know it.
Thinking of you
*hug*

Re: Renal Failure

Thanks for your comments. she is totally off Hills, but did manage to eat some chicken last night & a bit this morning. What I can't understand is why she has lost her hearing completely. Is this a side effect of kidney failure?
At the moment she is asleep in one of her favourite spots in the garden & as long as she is well enough to want to go outside I will just take things from day to day. Thanks again for your thoughts.

Re: Renal Failure

Hello
I do hope things have stablised since you posted. My cat has CRF, was diagnosed a couple of months ago. She couldnt tolerate the Hills or Royal Canin Renal diets available (both made her vomit profusely) but she loves the chicken Feline sensitivity by Royal Canin and this is the next best thing as she has other digestive problems. She is also taking 2.5 of Fortekor daily. My cat has the added complication of hyperthyroisim and she can be very lethargic one day but like a kitten the next. I thought I was going to lose her a few days after diagnosis as she was so ill so quickly but she is good at the moment and and hope your cat is too.

Re: Renal Failure

Thanks Whistler. Unfortunately Ruby has not eaten for a good few days & despite her strong will to live she had got too weak & she has been pts today.
Gone but will not be forgotten.
