calicivirus

Poor Jemima had a mouth swab taken last week when she went in to be spayed and the results have come back to say she has tested positive for calicivirus. You would not know to look, play etc. with her. She eats better than Bilbo! Just hope the antibiotics she went onto last week are working and she can continue on another dose of those - luckily she takes tablets no problem wrapped in cheese

Re: calicivirus

aww well it doesnt mean she cant be a healthy happy cat but you cant get rid of the calci virus and they will be Carry's for life so make sure she doesn't sneeze on another cat, mate or let other eats drink / eat from her bowls.

Other than that she may never even show any symptoms but it will be in her system for life.

Re: calicivirus

My understanding is Herpes is the virus that is carried for life. It lives in the nervous system and produces symptoms at times of stress. Calici can be got rid of in some cats. There are multiple strains of calici that mutate all the time so any vaccine is only as good as the last known strains. Vaccination doesn't stop your cat contracting flu just lessens the symptoms.

All in all it is nothing to worry about at all. The antiBs have no affect on the virus itself, if she is on those for the calici.

Re: calicivirus

Have to say Saikou I thought it was only Herpes for life too but being new to breeding I sometimes wander if I have the right info!

Such a minefield but once committed, I can only continue to learn & will never know it all!!

I wish Jemima a speedy recovery & hope you can sort out what AB's to put her on

antibiotics have great effect on results of virus,if left untreated it can go to the chest, and cause furthur problems, synolux liquid(antibiotics) is what i was given.

I heard that information from a feline specialist at a seminar. My vet told me different, but when I challenged her and repeated what the vet at the seminar had said, she admitted she wasn't entirely sure. If the veterinary profession can not agree - then we have no hope

Maybe they have discovered strains of calici that stay in the system, who knows. Of the two because of the reoccurrance of symptoms, Herpes seems to be the one to be slightly more concerned with, and calici the lesser of the two.

Antibiotics have no affect on the virus itself, if caught that has to run its course. AntiBs help keep secondary bacterial infections under control. The OP didn't say that her cat had symptoms, just that she had swabbed positive for calici. I am assuming the cat didn't have symptoms because she was spayed.

syptoms of calci are snotty noses, runny eyes, sneezing, secondary infection includes lung infection, amonst others why would a spayed cat not suffer these symtoms??

Re: calicivirus

Antibiotics do not have any effect on a virus whatsoever, the only reason antibiotics are ever given are to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections (eye infections, nasal infections, fever etc etc)

Calicivirus is not always carried for life, in fact there is a very high percentage that get it and get rid after 75 days and never carry it, however in that 75 days they can infect other cats in a multicat household and the circle will continue - separation and OCD cleaning is the only way to keep it at bay in a house with more than one cat x

Herpes however is likely to be carried for life in the majority of cats, but symptoms and shedding can be lessened in these cases by a lovely thing called l-lysine x

Keep doing what you're doing with your girl and keep a clean house and a couple of months down the line she may be completely clear of it with no reoccurences x

i studied the subject when i first started breeding, i wanted to make sure i had all the info on the nasties that can happen x
