Maybe they have discovered strains of calici that stay in the system, who knows. Of the two because of the reoccurrance of symptoms, Herpes seems to be the one to be slightly more concerned with, and calici the lesser of the two.

My goodness, just goes to show sometimes it is really hard to know who to trust!! I think as been said it is better to speak to another breeder/person who has infact dealt with an infection of somekind before.

Oh the joys of being a breeder!!

Thank you for the info via lysine Lou xx Have heard that helps xx It has been mentioned to me about breeders/people who show their cats that it may be an idea to supplement with the lysine, maybe food for thought I think xx

Re: calicivirus

Wow was not expecting such a response!

When we got Jemima she had previously had gingivitus which had been treated and breeders vet had given clean bill of health - when we took Jemima in for her spaying the vet said her gums looked a little sore still and i explained all showing her note from breeders vet.

Our vet said that once she was under the anesthetic and had a good look in her mouth they were a little concerned and took a swab for us which has come back positive.

By no signs i mean no sneezing, runny nose, etc. and eats and drinks with no problems so i guess only thing wrong was red gums which do not bother her.

Now a little worried as vet has told me that Bilbo will not catch it as they are not related and Bilbo had all his jabs before Jemima came onto the scene. But some people on here are saying can catch from playing with same toys, eating and drinking from same bowls etc. (just to add they do have there own bowls but try telling them that!)

half a 500mg capsule a day is the recommended dosage - i know breeders in the EU that use this through the winter to give immune systems a boost etc x

and no problems, i seem to pick up information everywhere these days x no good if you can't pass it on x

Re: calicivirus

This is a non medical opinion, but I would have thought that Bilbo would only be at risk if Jemima was shedding a strain of calici virus that he was not immune to. I think you would have seen symptoms from him within 10 days or so of her arrival, if that was the case.

I really wouldn't worry about the vets diagnosis, or Bilbo. Loads of cats have chronic gingivitus for lots of different reasons. Just try to keep her teeth as clean as possible - if she will chow down on a raw chicken wing or drumstick a couple of times a week, those really help keep plaque to a minimum. There are other things like logic gel, brushed on if Jemima will let you. There is also a paste you can get that soothes inflammed gums. It includes zinc which aids healing. I will see if I can find a link.

Re: calicivirus

It's obviously very mild calici and if bilbo hasn't picked it up yet then maybe he won't at all x

There is only a short period of time that the cats will shed it for and then if carriers it's usually brought on again by a lot of stress x

There's such a large amount of cats that have these things in their system unfortunately, until they can find a cure for it all we can do is wait x however even then with so many strains of the virus it would be very hard to cure them all i'm sure - but at least it would be a start x

Re: calicivirus

Am gradually weaning them both onto a raw diet as i hope this will help keep her teeth and gums healthy in the long run. As far as gels and that go she does not seem at all bothered lets me touch round and even in her mouth and like i said is eating, drinking, playing with no worries. Will see what the vet says tomorrow.

Let us know whats said hun, but i'd hazard a guess there isn't much they can say, if no secondary problems obviously your cat is doing ok and will more than likely shed it off and not have problems again (i shall touch wood as i hate tempting fate) x

Re: calicivirus

Saikou is correct - herpes is for life (although around 45% of infected cats never shed the virus again after their initial infection) and calici can be eliminated by the majority of cats - although they can be reinfected at a later date. A minority do become lifelong carriers, but they're not necessarily going to infect every other cat they come in contact with.
There is an excellent information sheet on cat flu on the FAB website.
