Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

One of my boys had a 2 week antibiotic jab and 1 week anti imflammatory jab last night due to having acne (first time it has appeared). He's a sensitive cat, sensitive emotionally, sensitive tummy, sensitive skin. You get the picture

His poos have 80% of the time ended a tad runny. Main part nicely formed maltesers, last bit a little dribble. He has had some sickness lately but once was due to eating too quickly (he sometimes gets hiccups) and the other was foam from hairballs (treated some with vaseline, fixed the 'choking' right away in both of mine).

Anyway, this morning he has just been and it was pure runny, the poor thing, looked more like a wee in the oko plus just brown.

I am on my way out soon to get some chicken and white fish and he can have that boiled for the next day or so to see if that settles his tummy.

Is there anything else I can do to help him like any medicines out there that will help?

Also my concern is this will last for the next 2 weeks. Is this a common side effect, how long could it last?

When I got them a few months ago at 5 months old they were having aloe gel once a week put on their food. The previous owner said this was because of his sensitive tum. When I got them i took them to the vets for a check and jab, neutering, etc and the vet said no real need for them to have it on a perm basis. Maybe this is something I could try again as an interim measure?

Re: Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

You could try slippery elm powder, you can buy it online or in health food shops, get the pure powder. A tsp on his food or mixed into goats yoghurt (low lactose and live so full of probiotics) with a bit of honey. Its great for soothing the digestive tract. It can inhibit the absorbtion of medication, antiBs especially, so don't give too close to administering those.

Protexin, also do an extra strengh probitoic powder in a capsule, especially formulated to help the gut recover after antibs its called Synbiotic-DC or something like that.

Re: Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

Thanks for that. The Protexin, would that be ok to give in the next few days or again wait a little while? And if it is stress (It may well be stress with him, as I said, v sensitive thing ) would the protexin help too?

Re: Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

I think the extra strength protexin is designed for after antiBs, not sure about the normal one. Your vet should have sachets of that and advise you whats best.

Re: Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

Your vet may have it. I have only seen it online - Best Pet Pharmacy and places like that.

Re: Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

Thanks for all of your replies. Vet has said I can pick up some Promax, so fingers crossed that helps. The big scab from his acne seems to have fallen off which is good

Re: Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

Have had the same problem with Baby. The Vet gave us packets of a pro-biotic to use for a month. It's worked great! I don't think it was very expensive.

Re: Diarrhoea and antibiotics?

Well I'm £28 down after getting a promax syringe (on the plus side he eats it straight from the syringe) and 9 150g cans of hills prescription. Hoping I can claim on the insurance, either way, just want him ok, that's the main thing.
