How can I get my cats to eat raw chicken?

Hi all

After reading so much about feeding on her over the last few months I decided I wanted my two siamese to have a raw chicken wing each week for the sake of their teeth. They are not fussy eaters (I've bought almost every wet food variety thats sold on zooplus along with a variety of dried foods) and they haven't ever had a funny tummy from anything they've eaten. They steal anything on our plate and have even tried the rabbits food (they suck it for a bit then spit it out after deciding its not so nice after all). So I thought they'd go straight for the raw chicken.

But when I put one on the kitchen floor before their normal feed time yesterday they both had a good sniff and a lick but didn't seem to get that it was food? They came back to it several times but never bit into it. I even pulled off some of the meat in small chunks but again they didn't seem interested in it as food. Any advice as to how I can encourage them to eat raw meat? My OH thinks I'm mad getting them to eat raw chicken, so I want them to enjoy it to prove its the right thing to do!

I was told to tie the wing/leg to a bit of string and pull it round the room.....I have tried this with Baxter and it worked a treat!! He played with it for a bit and then pounced and ripped it to bits with his teeth before eating it. He was knackered after this!

Thanks...what a good suggestion! They love attacking anything on a piece of string so I can really see that one working. Can't wait to get home now and try it out

Sometimes it can be difficult to start getting cats to eat raw. With wings try scoring the skin so that the flesh is exposed, or bashing it with a rolling pin (or other heavy object) to break it up a little. You try just try them on some raw chicken breats first as they may not find chicken appealling at all.

Re: How can I get my cats to eat raw chicken?

It might be a gradual process. Try tiny strips of raw mixed in with their regular wet, and gradually increase that to the point where they will happily eat the raw straight. Then try increasing the size of the chunks they have to chew on. Mine don't like chicken wings but love chicken drumsticks, probably because there is more flesh on there. Even those a bit daunting at first, but as has suggested, scoring the outside and exposing the flesh underneath helps. Its a lengthy process from there to get them to eat the bone, mine will eat the soft ball end and give the rest a good go, but aren't at the bone crunching stage yet.

To me your lucky they don't like raw... my cat is a right bugger, move away for a second to wash your hands and she steals it off the work tops! We have never once given her raw food to try!

I hope you get yours sorted and that they eventually learn to enjoy it as naturally as Lexi does!

Re: How can I get my cats to eat raw chicken?

Mai Tai wouldn't touch the chicken drumsticks to start with but now she will even steal them before they've thawed if she gets the chance - I have to do a quick rescue job and hide them! She likes to play around with them for a bit first though - I think she has to kill them and they never stay on her food mat . She doesn't eat the bone yet but I think she will get round to that too.
It's worth persevering I think - your two will probably soon realise that it's food. Mai Tai has a mainly raw diet now and really loves it

Cooked chicken bones are dangerous for that reason, but it doesn't apply to raw. Cooking changes the constitution of the bones. Raw bones are completely fine, as with 'raw' birds they catch for themselves - given half a chance.
