The Final Word on cat food?!

Hello! I've got a 4 month old Exotic variant and I very much want to make sure that he gets the best food and I really hope you can all help.

The dry food he is on is Royal Canin which seems to be accepted by many cat owners and breeders. (And he loves the stuff). However with regards to which wet cat food is best I see the great debate still goes on!

Along with his dry food we've been giving our little guy Lily's Kitchen wet cat food which they say has a 60% meat content. Does anyone know much about this company and if the food is indeed good for kittens and cats?

I was wondering if anyone could tell me which wet food is the best. I know to stay away from Whiskers (which wasn't easy with my last cat as he was addicted to the stuff!)

I've tried introducing my kitten to Royal Canin Instinctive wet kitten food but he was not impressed by it all all. Which is interesting as he enjoys their dry food.

I would love to know what you all think as I want to give him the food that's best for his health.

Thanks in advance to you all!

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

there are so many available it can get kinda confusing

I do admit by boys get anything from Tescos own brand to Schmusy and Active Fit with the occasional Hills Science Plan wet foods alongside their Royal Canin dry

Because they are on a complete dry food it allows to give them what they want to eat in wet food and they go off stuff fairly quickly (or they did til I got them on a steady rotation)

You are gonna get a lot of people saying what is best and I have to just say I don't think there *is* a single one out there that is "best" as it varies from cat to cat

I would just say go for the highest meat/lowest addetives one you can find that your cat enjoys and doesn't give him runny poop

Oh I will say though my boys coats and teeth are looking great since I started them on a weekly raw chicken wing, bones and all... cleans teeth, strengthens jaw and neck muscles and allsorts of other benefits, but confining to the kitchen a good idea so you don't find leftovers a coupl days later *ick*

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

Royal canin dry is not good, its full of maize/corn, betula my bengal was on that when i got her and crappy felix. She had a terrible tummy took me a while to get her right.

If you want to feed dry theres the new applaws dry that looks good ingredients wise.

Wet food, well hi-life, natures menu, tesco luxury/finest are all good complete high meat content wet foods i'd recommend.

My cats are on hi-life with occasional treat of applaws and are quite happy.

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

Why are people so keen on Royal Canin, or does it just depend on the individual cat? It's everywhere at the mo, and has been reccommended to me by a few people. I think I'm getting even more confused!

Thank you both so much for your advice. I'm going to look into the brands you've both suggested

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

I like Applaws or Porta 21 for wet food. Both have at least 80% meat/fish content and do look good enuf to eat!
I used to use royal canin but have just tried orijen. What a revelation! No more runny poops or sick piles and it lasts and lasts.

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

it is such a confusing world with cat food

Indy (my oldest boy) lost condition and weight and became very hyperactive when fed on go-cat (hey I was new to cats) or whiskas kitten dry foods, he refuses point blank to eat any dry other than Burns or Royal Canin... anything else (dry food wise) that he does eventually give in and eat he loses weight or has toilet issues.

Royal Canin in his case is the ideal food, will eat it consistantly, he is in fantastic condition

not saying it is for everyone... but it is good overall

oooh found another good wet, Bozita... not cheap but good

found on Zooplus.co.uk

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

The wet food your feeding wit h60% meat sounds absoloutly fine! Its certainly better quality than most wet foods out there. I havent heard ofthat brand though lol. If he is happy on it then stick to it.

Other good wet foods are - applaws (sainsburys do their own version too), highlife etc. When i use wet food (i feed raw and arden grange normally) I use forthglade. Its 100% meat protein and imho the best.

Seriously though the one you are using sounds very good, and i would stick to that as he seems happy!

Dry food is a different story and so many arguments (oops i mean debates) have started on here over which is the best, not to mention the dry/raw/wet debates! If your cat is happy and healthy on what you are feeding then stick to it!

edit: forgot to say WELCOME TO THE FORUM

can we see a pic of your cat?

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

Hi, where do you buy the Forthglade? I think I've used it many years ago (rings a bell) but haven't seen it fo sale anywhere recently. Is it really 100% meat? I didn't think that was possible with a commercial wet food.

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

My two persians, and two exotics are on Royal Canin and have a fantastic coat and are very healthy. I have just started mixing a bit of Burns in which they love.

As for wet, i give them mainly raw chicken and mince which they thrive on. They like Applaws too, and i but alot of the organic cat food from Zooplus.

I'm going to start giving them Forthglade meats as well.

Re: The Final Word on cat food?!

I found this

http://petshop2u.co.uk/proddetail.ph...cat-food-13633

but I don't know what size the packs are - have asked them.

The other food they do (Natural menu) is not complete and is intended for dogs as well as cats - has a lower protein content.
