Question Kitten food plan advice

I am new to all of this so any advice would be really appreciated.

We have a 14 week old kitten and are currently feeding her

1/2 a whiskas pouch in the morning and at night and hills science dried food throughout the day

Also some times instead of 1/2 pouch in the evening we are feeding her cooked chicken or fish

This is what we were told to feed her but I just wanted to know if there was anything else better or that we could add in

Thank you for any advice you can give me

Hiya it sounds OK to me. Id possibly give her the chicken raw and possibly a whole pouch in the morning to make sure she gets all her vits

I find that James well beloved, Arden grange, Purina are all better then hills

Re: Kitten food plan advice

Hiya,

When Jasper was that age I'd give him a pouch in the morning and another in the evening and dry down all day. I started off with Hills too but Jasp prefers the James Wellbeloved so I've switched to that. You can't really over feed a kitten so if she's hungry give her more food (obviously within reason!). Sometimes theres no filling them up and other times they're not really interested.x

Re: Kitten food plan advice

I have 2 kittens, one 27 weeks and one 12 weeks and they're eating between 2 & 3 pouches a day each, and there is dry food down during the day too. To be honest I'm not sure you're feeding her enough.

Kittens need a lot of food to help their growth and they also expel a lot of energy at play time (well ours do anyway!!), it might be worth feeding her a bit more, especially if she's clearing her bowl at each sitting.

Also, we use James Wellbeloved biscuits, they seem to be a bit of a favourite on here!

I'd say get him off the whiskas - its full of cr*p!

Applaws is a good wet food, and Burns or JWB for biscuits. When mine were that young i used to feed them wet 3 times a day until they were about 6 months.

Raw chicken and raw mince is also a really good food for them

Re: Kitten food plan advice

with the raw foods do they have to be cold or room temperature?

Also if I am giving them fish can this be raw too or must it be cooked?

Sorry if those sound silly questions but I am a vegetarian myself and do not cook meat I am not sure how meats should be served

Re: Kitten food plan advice

hiya no question is silly, its how we all learn

no raw fish, boiled cod or something is ok, tuna only once a week as its in brine (salty) sardines in tom sauce, chicken, turkey, game, lamb, beef, rabbit. no pork, the fatty/cheaper cuts are best!

Chicken wings are only like £1.50 for 12 give 1 each 2 times a week is ok!

you dont need to cook it, buy it freeze it get it out the night before room temp if possilbe!

Re: Kitten food plan advice

i'd slowly change from the whiskas to a high meat content food about 50 - 60% meat (whiskas has 4%) Teso luxury. or Hilife, or Natures Menu - not expensive and really good for your kitten.

Not a silly question at all

I serve the raw mince & chicken straight from the fridge - mine love it and have really thrived on it.

You can buy tins of tuna in spring water rather than brine which is better for them, i give mine the mackeral in tomato sauce once a week for a treat but they dont really like tuna

You can quite happily feed raw fish to cats. Mine get raw fish (sardines, mackerel, tuna, salmon) once a week. You can feed canned tuna and canned salmon as long as it is in spring water and not brine. Fish should only be fed 4 of 5 times a month (this is the same as recomended for humans) as there are many toxins in the sea that build up in fish.

It really depends on your cat wether raw food is cold or at room temperature. Some just find cold meat unappealing, some eat it too quick and bring it straight back up and some are quite happy. I have a couple of kittens who constantly take cubes of de-frosting rabbit off the worktop and all my cats are fed frozen day old chicks (sorry) during the summer months for breakfast.

ALL meats are ok for cats including pork.
