Unhappy can anybody help.

hi, i am new to pet forums and was wondering if anybody could give me some advice on my kitten georgia,
she has been ill for a few days so my wife and i took her to the vets. they ave run all sorts of blood test and said she had a very bad gut infection and showed signs of feline FIP. but because they cant do a test for FIP they cant be sure. they gave her some antibiotics for the gut infections and over the past few days she seems to have come back to her normal self. no more loose poohs and eats like a trooper. i am just worried about this FIP. she has had a number of injections over the last week and each time she gets better and better. she is putting weight back on, playing with her toys and eating all her food,
my question to you is, if she is getting better is it unlikly she doesnt have full blown FIP and the infection from the gut was the reason she was so ill or could the antibiotics be helping but once she has stops taking them will she get worse,. i hope sombody can give me some advice.

There is a blood test they can do for FIP. I can not remember what it is exactly but there are 2 things they look for in the test that need to be in certain proportions. If that test is positive then FIP is a reasonable diagnosis. I would get your vet to speak to someone at Glasgow University. I think that's where the blood samples get sent for testing, but they should be able to tell your vet more.

FIP has symptoms that look like a myrriad of other things, and seems to always be vets knee jerk diagnosis. It does sound promising that your baby is responding to the treatment she is on though. For peace of mind I would push the vet to find out more.

I think this is it

Quote:
Serum Protein Levels. If the total serum protein is 7.8 g/dL or greater AND the A:G ratio (ratio of two different blood proteins) is less than 0.6, FIP becomes a more likely diagnosis. A few other diseases may also cause this, but these are also very severe and usually fatal.
It is not definitive, but is a very good indication.

Re: can anybody help.

Hello, welcome to the forum,
sorry to hear your kitten has been ill. Unfortunately vets are very quick to jump to an FIP diagnosis - from the symptoms you describe it does not sound like FIP at all - it wouldn't normally cause serious gut related symptoms. Also the fact that she seems to have made a good recovery with antibiotics makes FIP much less likely.

I hope she will soon be back to normal.
