Worming Tablets

So its come to the time in which i need to give Izzy her worming tablet.. the last time it was done the vet did it (and i wasnt there to see how its done)

I tried to give it to her last night in a small bit of ham, but the ham went down and the tablet didnt.. however the moisture from the ham has started to turn the tablet to powder form.. and everytime i tried to give it to her, she was throfing at the mouth as obviously the taste wasnt very nice..

i was just popping my finger to the side of her mouth and she would open up.. but im stuck as to how to get her to keep the tablet down

Does anyone have any ideas or good ways in which they do it?

she doesnt really eat any treats or anything.. so hiding it in food doesnt seem to be an option

Re: Worming Tablets

We just crush Tilly’s up and mix it in with her meat; she eats it without even realising. We tried the tablet whole once and it was a nightmare so that seems the best way, does your cat eat wet food? If not, it could be a little trickier and I’m not much help I’m afraid!

Also, what you said about your cat frothing at the mouth when it started to go powdery – I can relate! I put a paracetamol down on the table once whilst I fiddled with the packet, unaware that I had spilt a little puddle of water on there earlier; I went to put it in my mouth and it was powdery instantaneously. I’ve never pulled such funny faces, it was disgusting!!

Re: Worming Tablets

Thanks for your help..

Izzy is on dry food only, but i had bought a couple of felix chicken pouches a few months ago when we were planning on letting her outside, they were going to be used as a treat when she came back hehe.. but as it turns out she isnt really interested enough in the outside world and they were never used (This might change in the summer when its warm outside..)

So last night i opened up the bag and took a teaspoon sized amount out, she was loving it! so i popped the tablet into the mix.. she's eaten half of it so far without noticing, so i left the other half in some more this morning.. hopefully it will be all gone by the time i get home.

I push mine well inside of a piece of cheese!!! Don't normally touch the sides as they gobble it that fast!

Re: Worming Tablets

Cheese, havent let her try that yet! didnt realise they'd like cheese

she had a few mouthfulls of the felix and then started to paw it around the kitchen like a toy, she seems to do that after a few mouthfulls of any unusual food i give her

Can indoor cats still get worms? is it something they get whether indoors/outdoors? or is it something they will usually pick up from the outside world?

Re: Worming Tablets

Oops Sorry - just realized we are talking cats!! normally it takes two of us to do this, One will hold him, wrapped in a towel if need be, the other will push tha pill as far back in his throat as possible then hold his mouth together and rub his throat until he swallows - sounds cruel but its all over in a matter of seconds.
You can get a pill poper - but they don't work for us
regards
DT

Re: Worming Tablets

i get behind the cat, hold them, open the mouth, push the tablet in and hold mouth shut whilst stroking the throat and saying "has it gone yet?...yes?" let go of them and then either they run off and sulk or spit the tablet out at me....

they are too clever to eat anything with it in, they are too old and wise and know the tricks.

Re: Worming Tablets

Since writing my response I’ve been cursed! It was a timely post as we were due to give Tilly the last course of her worming treatment last night. Did the usual which has worked the last two times of crushing up in her wet food but the last tablet was different to the other previous two and had a really strong smell. Needless to say, she smelt it in her food a mile off and now won’t touch it. This morning it was still there, I mixed in some fresh meat and gave her a handful of dry food but I’ve left that with her today in the hope that she will get hungry and eventually eat it. If she’s still not touched it when I get home from work I’ll have to give her fresh food and try another tablet the old fashioned way – she hates being restrained to put her collar on and off so I’m sure pushing a tablet down her throat will send her into crazy mode; our little girl is excellent at holding a grudge and making you feel bad for days!
