Is dry dog food bad for cats?

On Wednesday I rescued two cats from The Cats Protection and one is eating everything I put down for him but the other is only eating a little.
I was looking for tuna in the cupboard but only had salmon and thought maybe next time, but I do have lots of dry dog food? So took a hand full up and both cats eat it, is this ok or not?
The food I have been feeding is what they have been eating?
I dont want to poison the cat but also don't want to starve him?

Re: Is dry dog food bad for cats?

Hi Paris&Troy, i would not recommend feeding dog food to cats. It doesn't have the right amount of protein in. (amongst other things!)
If your cat is fussy, it really is a case of trail and error. You can buy trial packets of food from most pet stores. Try the cat on these before you buy a big bag. You are sure to find something out there that the cat likes. Something that is designed specially for cats.

Re: Is dry dog food bad for cats?

Dry dog food is not good for cats as it is meant to swell in dogs tums to make them feel fuller faster and not over eat. One or two pieces won't hurt them but if eaten in large amounts it could stop up their gut and cause them pain which may or may not lead to a vet appointment. Please don't feed your cats this.

Re: Is dry dog food bad for cats?

Yes Yes Sorry Sorry Doubled! On my phone which makes it harder!
So no dry dog food, I have been trying the different flavours and tins or packets, he does eat the cat treat sticks straight away when given which makes me think he is hungry but doesn't really like the food but that is what I have been told to feed?
What if I offer as a back up a long side the felix the recommended food the soaked dog food as a tempery till Monday? I work weekends and I can go to the Cats Protection and ask if there is a flavour he likes? Is there a time to worry about him not eating?

Re: Is dry dog food bad for cats?

Please don't feed dog food to cats - it is lacking in nutrition for them. Cats are carnivores and they need a high percentage of meat protein in their diet - you need to look for good quality foods such as Hi Life, Natures Menu etc. There are lots of threads on here about this. Even dried cat food is not a good diet for them, it is far too high in carbohydrate and of course low in moisture content.
