Dirty Ear

Hi All

One of our cats has had a dirty ear for the last few years. One ear is always clean and the other ear gets full of black stuff thats quite dry. He loves it when I clean it out, and is very thankful to me! I just wondered what this black stuff was and why it only ever affects one ear?!

Thanks

Re: Dirty Ear

Hi,

It sounds like ear mites, take him to the vets and get it checked, more than likely he will give you some surolan or canuaral which is really good stuff. As long as you follow the treatment for 21 days you should get it cleared pretty quickly.

Do you have other cats, if so they may need treatment to as its a contagious ailment.

Izzie

Re: Dirty Ear

Hi

We have two other cats, but neither of them have any dirt in their ears. Ted does have a scratch now and again but nothing major.

Ill get him to the vets, thank you!

Re: Dirty Ear

Some cat's ears have over productive wax glands. I wouldn't like to say if it's mites or not. If it hasn't spread to the other cats or to the other ear it's not likely to be mites. But this would need to be seen by a vet with a scope to be sure.

You could treat him for mites with Stronghold flea/mite and worm treatment or Advocate monthly and see if it clears up. Using this in conjunction with just some ear cleaner from your vets should clear it up whether it's mites or just over active wax build up.
