Cat's paw - please help !

hello i wonder if anyone can advise me please as i am really starting to get stressed about my cat

the cat is about 4 years old with a multiple fracture of right rear leg that was treated over 2 years ago, he has a slight limp but uses it pretty well considering he nearly lost it, had an external clamp on for 12 weeks

oki last tuesday the cat got involved in what seemed to be a cat fight and struggled to get home as his other rear leg seemed to be slightly bleeding and swollen, now i immediately treated the wounds with warm salty water and put some anti septic cream on, i could smell the infection and it looked only a few hours old if that, the following day the paw & surrounding area had really swelled up so i took him to the vet who gave him a few injections, two days later and no improvement so he was booked in to have it clipped and cleaned up, there was a slight infection and multiple bite wounds but there was quite a serious amount of swelling [ x rays showed no fractures ]

oki today the cats paw is till really swollen and i am concerned as he still not interesting in eating but he had some sliced turkey last night after the op, he is still doing his business but does not want any attention and every time i get close he legs it into the garden to hide under a tree, i have now put him in a quiet place in the house, i am concerned as the last time my other cat had this sort of puncture wound the swelling went down after 2 days of treatment but this has been 4 days and still the paw looks as if it has been run over by a car as it looks twice the size and still isnt using it

could someone help

btw he is insured and already cost the insurance 400 quid

It sounds as though he has pocket of infection that has lodged there, so does need to have it looked and and dealt with. If he is in pain, and abscesses are very painful, that would put him off his food and make him just hide away.

It does sound like an abcess which will need lancing and antibiotics so I'd say go back to the vet. Cats are very prone to absesses from this sort of injury.

If a bit of pus came out, is there a scab somewhere on his paw that you can pick off? If you can, that should release some of the pressure and pain. Bathe the wound with a salt solution or hibiscrub solution to keep it clean, squeezing as much of the pus out as he will let you. Monday is quite a long time to wait with a painful swelling.

Re: Cat's paw - please help !

the swelling was the same before they squeezed it out

in fairness it has gone down a bit and he seems more comfortable after taking his anti inflammatory

the cat is in enuff pain after he was neutered whilst going under for his paw

i will have a good chat monday morning and ask why his foot aint gone down

he just had some sliced cooked ham, some mild cheddar cheese and some tuna so his appetite is returning gradually

when he came back from the vet yesterday i noticed they had taken all the old scabs off his paw so they must of tried squeezing it out

hi i would not let him out i would keep him as still as possible, maybe in a cat pen and keep the wound clean. if you keep letting him out you are only infecting the paw more.

Hi,

Take him to the vet, its great that you have the stuff to treat him at home but he really needs a proper check up, definitely after having previous problems with his legs.
