New here - sick kitten (also insurance question)

I am sorry that my first post here is for advice - I hope to get to know you better and stick around too!

We adopted two kittens from an animal shelter, just over two weeks ago. They came wormed, de-flead and with first injections done. In the first few days one of our little kits became ill with diarrhea. The vet concluded it was the combination of strees, worming treatment and change of food - with a little treatment he got better.

Kitty number two, got ill a few days later - this time with conjuctivitis, which he's had drops for and also recovered. But last night, the same kitten was sick. The vomit was pretty much solid biscuit, in the form it went down. He ate and drank normally all day, no more vomit. Then this evening, he has vomitted twice, once regurgitated wet food. The second time, half an hour later, seemed to me much more digested. He's back to sleeping with his brother now, though I think he might have the wind!

His poop has been normal and solid, he has not been off his food and has been as active as usual. They are both almost 4 mths old and due for second injections next week. They have both been eating a dry for snacking with wet 3 times a day. I hope to get a vet appointment in the morning, but can anyone shed any light in the meantime, anything I should be doing?

On a side note, we have the charity pet insurance they came with, but I want to set somethinelse up for both, when this expires. Any suggestions?

Re: New here - sick kitten (also insurance question)

Sorry to hear your kittens are poorly, but the vet is defiantely the best person to advise you on what to do. When my cats are poorly or have upset tummys I tend to boil chicken breast for them to eat (it's now a once or twice a week treat as they love it so much), so you could try that. As for insurance, I can only tell you my experience which is with M&S pet insurance, I have just had to make my first claim as Jasper has hyperthyroidism and they have paid the first bill within 2 weeks. So I have no complaints, but no experience of any other pet insurer either. I hope this helps and good luck with your little babies I hope they make speedy recoveries

Re: New here - sick kitten (also insurance question)

Thank you for your response. The vet has said that he has gastro-enteritis, a blade of grass stuck up his nostril (!) and ear mites. This kitty came from the rescue centre, as a poorly cat it seems

He's had a treatment for the mites (back of neck drops - how does that work?). Some water solution for hydration, and a quick injection for the gastro (presumably antibiotics). He has still been sick again tonight (it is often hours after eating), and we are to take him back on Thursday if no better, because there might be an obstruction.

Having had many cats over the years, I have never had such a bumpy start before.

I Will look into the M&S cover - thank you

Re: New here - sick kitten (also insurance question)

Pleased to hear he is getting treatment by the vets. Cats are so prone to getting blades of grass up their nostrils or down their throats, so that isn't unusual at all. The drops on the back of the neck for the mites, I can only assume will work the same way as the flea and worming drops you can buy, which I use on my cats (Frontline, Drontal etc). Poor little kitty is having a rough start but at least it's all getting sorted, and hopefully the antibiotics injection will sort him out and he'll be on the road to a full recovery. He's a very lucky kitty to have you and I'm sure will give you lots of love in return.

As you have an insurance cover note, if you stay with that company will you still be covered for any ongoing treatment if you start a new policy with them? I only ask, as lots of companies will not cover anything they describe as a 'pre existing condition' when you start a new policy with them, so I would ask about that.
