kitten food

I think Mai Tai likes junk food! Can anyone recommend a good quality wet kitten food? She is refusing to eat HiLife or Nature's menu but is gobbling up Tesco's own - their kitten pouches are not as good as the good quality adult ones, more like their basic own brand. I tried Hill's pouches and while she ate them they didn't seem to be any better in content than the Tesco's own .
Or should I just move her onto adult meals? She is 6 months old and has adult biscuits anyway. What are the advantages of keeping her on kitten food? Never had this problem years ago before kitten food was developed!

Re: kitten food

There is kitten applaws, Pets at Home do kitten wet thats complete and high in meat. Mine have a complete kitten kibble (Hills which is about 60%+ chicken). As I have 2 it's easy to put out like tonite, a Tesco finest adult complete tin, and a Natures menu. If they don't like it, as in don't eat all of it, keep trying, mine used to be like that with Hills, then I stopped putting it out, then in the last few days they've had 4 and finished them all. On the flip side, Tesco finest, and Sainsburys Encore used to go in seconds, now sometimes it's left.

As you say, before kitten food came along, cats just ate adult food and still managed to live 20+ years. Mine are 2 v different weights/sizes so I am more inclined to have some kitten out for mine so that the little one gets whatever he needs in the hope he grows some more. Luckily he's not as picky as the large one.

Re: kitten food

Hi Lyn,

As mentioned above I think the PAH own is good, it's called Purely and is 50% meat and very reasonable too. Jasper loves it and hasn't got bored of yet at all which is a miracle in itself!! They also do an adult version so you could maybe do a half kitten half adult food combo! I'm having the same thing about moving Jasper onto adult food as he is also 6 months now. He has 2 kitten pouches a day and a tin of encore (sainsburys own version of appelaws). xx

Re: kitten food

Fluffy does like Hi-Life and Purely which is quite similar.

He really loves Applaws kitten (wet) and will also eat Porta 21 kitten, though isn't so keen.

You could try giving some plain fish/meat for variety too, alongside a complete food. Fluffy likes tinned tuna or sardines, poached white fish or cooked chicken or lamb.

Also, if Mai Tai doesn't like it, they do a 100% guarantee. Mine sniffed it and walked off so back it went

Re: kitten food

Thanks for your replies. I usually buy all cat food from our local pet shop but will pop into PAH and have a look at their range. If I run out before then I'll give her some of Gizmo's HiLife and see if she likes that. She certainly likes the smell of it when I feed them but he won't let her near his dish . If it's only the size of peices then I think she'll be ok with adult food. She gets cooked chicken and beef and occasional raw chicken drumsticks too.

Re: kitten food

She'll be fine on adult foods. Kitten food is only a sales gimmick as I've said before! Of course kittens managed perfectly well before kitten foods existed, they've only been around for the last 20 years or so after all.
