what to do?

hi..first post here and a sad one.....
had our cat for over 13 years and has been no trouble what so ever(accept the nights i was chasing mice around the house after he had brought them in to show me!)but he had gone off his food for about a week and had hardly eat anything in that time and not being a big cat, started to look thin, and was sleeping alot more then usual..we thought it might be his teeth so took him to the vets on friday and we knew it was bad when the vet asked if we had insurance,he asked if he could take a blood test and a scan, which he did and about half-a-hour later rang to say he had liver disease and was really serious and couldnt rule out tumours although didnt show on scan.He asked us if we wanted him put down as there really wasent anything worth doing,i said no and collected him with some anti-biotics and pain killers(as the vet couldnt tell if he was in pain). It was such a shock and we really wanted to spend abit more time with him..now what to do?...and how much longer?

anybody had any experience with a cat with bad liver disease?

Re: what to do?

Hi, and welcome to the board. I am so sorry to hear about your cat. I have no direct experience with liver disease, but found these links.

Feline Liver Disease ~ Pawprints and Purrs, Inc.

Liver Disease in Cats - Causes, Symptoms & Treatment of Feline Liver Disease

I am not sure if those would be of any help, but they do seem to imply treatment is possible. I think your vets attitude was very poor, and highly insensitive. I would be tempted to get a second opinion, and maybe if your cat is insured to seek a referal to a specialist at the RVC or Animal Health Trust.

Re: what to do?

I'm sorry I can't offer any practical advice but you have all my sympathy. I do hope your vet can find a suitable treatment for Jack and you are able to spend a little more quality time with him.

I'm so sorry to hear about your cat, lets just hope the vet can find a treatment, or maybe you could get a second opinion from another vet just in case. Will keep fingers crossed for you xxx

Re: what to do?

I hope you get some answers, and that there is a treatment that can help Jack. Some vets forget that these are family members they treating. I would also ask whether because he hadn't eaten for a while before they did the test, that that hadn't skewed the results slightly. Sending lots of healing vibes Jacks way.

Re: what to do?

If you can find a treatment in a couple of days, fine - go for it. But I believe that as a responsible owner you have to look at your companion and ask yourself, has he quality of life?

Without quality, quantity is nothing.

Your wife crying - that is natural, this is a family member that has been with you 13 years. All the family needs to go through this grieving process.

If you do decide to pts, have you any other pets? If so, let them see the dead body. It will reassure them. If I was putting my pet to sleep I would:

Pay extra for a home visit if I could afford it
Pay extra for a seditive before the lethal injection.

Sorry this sounds so negative. ireally hope that you can find treatment and restore health.
