Smoking around new born kittens -Advice pls

Hi,

I was wondering if somebody could advise me.

I have agreed to buy a new kitten, we live 3-4 hrs drive away from her and was really just expecting to view her progress by telephone and on the Net until she's ready for us to pick her up Mid April.

Just one thing though, I feel alittle worried about the health of the kitten. This seems kind of embarrassing, but I know for sure that the breeder smokes heavily and I worry that she does around the kittens.

Should I be concerned about this ? Am I worring over nothing ? And do you think I should visit her before she is ready to make sure everything is ok. Because of lack of time, (partner works long hours) this maybe difficult, but I'm sure we could try and make this happen for peace at mind.

We recently bought a kitten, unfortunately he's dying of a Tumour and so I'm being especially cautious when getting another regarding their health etc.

Also, what sort of questions should I be asking ?

Any help, much appreciated.

A lot of breeders smoke. In the olden days at cat shows, by the end of the day, you could barely see the cats for the smoke.

Although obviously not ideal, I have never heard of it affecting kittens, or cats. I think I would be more concerned that the kitten looks healthy and well grown, that their pedigree does not have too many of the same cats. Also that the breeder doesn't have a high mortality rate in their litters and that, especially bearing in mind what you are going through with your other baby, they have no history of cancers in their lines as some are hereditary, such as lymphatic sarcoma/lymphoma/Lymphosarcoma in siamese and orientals.

If non-smoking humans can be affected by secondary cigarette smoke (hence the laws in UK and Ireland about not allowing smoking in public places and offices) animals can too.

There was some research in USA that showed that, by informing pet owners the harm they were doing to their pets by smoking, this was a strong incentive to give up smoking.

I was concerned about this issue as well.
As I'm planning to get cats this year but I am currently living with my mother, due to unfortunate circumstances, and she still smokes, though not as much as she used to.
I've had a chat with her but the best she'll concede to is more airing, which is better than nothing.

People who live near me are extremley heavy smokers -and smoked around their dog. The dog had a constant cough. This then developed in to cancer -the dog is now dead.

That's sad to hear.

Re: Smoking around new born kittens -Advice pls

The general concensus on the net seems to be that cats do not live long enough to be grossly affected. It can cause increase in certain cancers, but I would imagine that would have to be caused by exposed to heavy smokers for years. I doubt it would have any affect on a 13/14 week old kitten. All the cats I bought in came from smokers. I don't smoke I hasten to add, but none of them had any kind of problem.

IMO there are far more immediate issues to worry about when by buying a new kitten

Re: Smoking around new born kittens -Advice pls

i would not let any of my babies around anyone who smokes that includes people who buy them. but that is just me as i don't like it but other people might feel different also you don't know for sure the breeder is smoking around the kittys if it was me i would ask as this is going to be your cat and you are going to be paying good money and you don't want a ill cat at the end of the day.
