constipation and swelling

our 11 month boy cat had diarrhoea and kept licking his backside. He is fine in himself but now he is constipated and his backside is a bit swollen. I read we should squeeze it to help him get out the rubbish in the swelling but he was having nothing of it. He is still fine but continually klicking himself

I am at a loss what to do - any ideas anyone? is it dangerous? should i get him to a vet? his sister is sniffing his backside lots as well

advice.... x

Re: constipation and swelling

Please don't squeeze it! You could cause some damage if you do not what you are doing.

If you are concerned about your kitten you should take it to see the vets to be sure there isn't any thing sinister going on. Make sure kitty is on a healthy kitten food, has lots of water and has been wormed. Don't feed kitty any people food or milk(including cat milk for a little while), cows milk is never good for kitties. Cut out kitty's treats and just keep it minimal, food/water until you can speak to a vets. If this has been going on for more than three days I would suggest you ring an out of hours vets ASAP.

If it's not been wormed speak to your vets first before worming as if there is a intestinal problem they will want you to wait for the diarrhea or constipation to stop before worming as this can exacerbate the situation. Your vet will be able to help you work out if it's all from worms or if it's an irritated tum. They will also be able to advise you on how to reduce the constipation and ease the discomfort of the lil kitty. It's also a possibility that kitty has swallowed something and this should be checked by your vets. All the best.

Mia

Re: constipation and swelling

NO ON ON NO NO NO!!!!

Please DO NOT!! Squeeze it!!!

MY cat gets constipated badly and it is extremely painful for them

Take him to he vets ASAP!!! And I mean ASAP!

They will do one of 2 things:

Give him a mild enema with a little stick thingy & give you some lax to take home

OR

If it is quite serve they will do a full enema and under mild sedation get the poop out

Give him pain meds & you can take him home when he wakes up

This has been with my cat for 13 years Last November I thought I would lose him as he was so bad, the poo turned out to be SO big it looked like humans!!

Only give him wet food for a while no biccis, biccis make it harder to poop for some cats, make sure he has lots of water and cat milk if he doesnt drink alot as this helps it go through.

After about 4 weeks try the biccis again wtih wet meat, if he gets constipated again stay away from biccis, it has saved my cat Alot of pain

Anything else please ask I often tell the vets what to do now!! after 13years I am well acquainted wit the cats bum!!!

Re: constipation and swelling

hi all

first of all, thanks for all your advice.
update - last night we found blood in his urine so we called the vet straight away and took him to emergency service. He has a kind of cystitis so she gave him some medicine and great advice to make him drink - cat nip in warm water, water fountain, tuna juice in water. Luckily he will eat wet food (his siter won't) but he is an indoor cat and a bit overweight so I need to find light wet food)

This morning he was so happy, bounding around and just so loving!

thanks so much for all your advice and support - I am so glad I found Petforums!
