Alternative to Orijen?

After reading all the stuff on the other thread about Orijen cat food I am contemplating chucking mine out and replacing with something else.

I chose Orijen as it had a high meat content compared to lots of other dry foods. Fluffy has mainly Hi-Life or Purely plus Applaws, Porta21 and some plain fish/meat etc.

Can anyone recommend a good quality dry kitten food that I can use instead of the Orijen? I like to leave some out in the day when we're at work.

Theres nothing wrong with Orijen if you want to feed dry. If you are refering to the Australian incident this was caused by the Australians irradiating food imports not by Orijen. A couple of UK based companies tried to blow this all out of proportion.

That is correct Karen - I do not use it but was speaking to our supplier on Thursday when they cam into the conversation - I was told there is nothing whatsoever wrong with the UK supply, I think if you check on the website you wsll get the full update .

Re: Alternative to Orijen?

Yeah I understand it was only the Australian stuff that was affected due to irradiation, but it still raises questions about the company as a whole. Why didn't they recall products more quickly, why hadn't they tested this process out etc? There are also according to some posts, other incidents of Origen having to issue recalls for other reasons. It just concerns me that perhas it's not as high quality etc as they make out!

I may continue to ue what I have bought but I am still tempted to switch brands when I buy more food.

Re: Alternative to Orijen?

If people are uncomfortable feeding their cats with Orijen, then so be it. I am going to shoot an email off to Champion tomorrow as I have some concerns I would like them to provide answers for.

In the meantime, in reply to the OP, Applaws dry is equally as high in meat % and I know around the time of the Aussie issue, they were offering a straight swap Orijen for Applaws. However, while initially a lot of peoples cats on here seemed to love it, after a while it was giving them the squits. So I think you will find more people on here using Orijen rather than Applaws dry. Also, someone did post in the Applaws dry thread that they had a packet of the dry tested and it contained faeces. Make of that what you will.

MPM Products are the manufacturers and they also produce the 'Encore' Range at Sainsburys for cheaper. I believe it may be slightly different as my cats will barely touch Applaws (won't touch Applaws kitten at all) yet will eat Encore. This is wet I'm talking about. Anyway, so Encore dry will be appearing in Sainsburys 'early March'.

Mine were on a Hills kitten chicken mix with Orijen until I cut out the Orijen a few days ago re: posts on this website. The Hills kitten is 60%+ meat but yes, contains those cereals. Having said that, between 2 they get 3 small handfuls a day given a 10min lag after they get wet.

As dried foods go, I quite like Grau lamb & rice - it has no other ingredients apart from vits/minerals - and carrots! It's not specifically for kittens but I don't think kitten foods are anything more than a sales gimmick - they're not necessary as kittens are quite OK to be fed adult foods.
