Diarrhoea?

I've never had this problem with my cats as yet......but yesterday i noticed Alfie had some poo stuck to his bum, and when i watched him do to the toilet he has a little diarrhea.

His diet hasnt changed, and he is eating, drinking & playing fine. What causes this and should he see a vet straight away?

I know diarrhea can cause dehydration but i have been watching him and as i say before he is eating and drinking normally

Re: Diarrhoea?

Is he on antiBs ? They can cause diarrhoea sometimes. Lots of things can cause them to be a bit runny from time to time. I would see how he goes for 24 hrs. If he seems fine in himself eating and drinking normally, and he doesn't have a problem getting into the tray in time , or is not going more often than normal then he should be fine on his own. Give him something light like boiled chicken or white fish. If it continues tomorrow then I would pop him to the vet for a check.

If he is not constantly going, and is still drinking then he shouldn't become dehydrated.

Re: Diarrhoea?

Sometimes it can just be a slight imbalance - can be caused by loads of things, not necessarily food wise either x

If eating and drinking fine and if wormed and not on antiB's as already mentioned i'd be inclined to just see how he goes x

check temperature maybe but if it is just a small imbalance it will right itself pretty quickly x

if still like it in a day or so then maybe ask vet, but they'll more than likely only suggest pro-kolin or something xx

Re: Diarrhoea?

Thanks guys - he was wormed about 2 weeks ago and he's not on AB's?

I was on poo watch last night and he did a solid one, and then a little later he did another runny poo??

He still seems fine in himself though?

I'm wondering if i should just buy some pro kolin anyway and give that to him??

Re: Diarrhoea?

A little bit of diarrhoea isnt anything to get too concerned about and I wouldnt bother with kaolin just yet.
Diarrhoea is sometimes a good way for the body to eliminate nasties ur cat may have injested.....does she hunt/obtain food elsewhere??

Re: Diarrhoea?

our 11 month boy started getting diarrhoea 2 days ago - he also is fine in himself, appetite etc fine. But he has taken to licking his backside more than usual - any ideas? Also his rear looks slightly swollen - but that may be us worrying

Re: Diarrhoea?

Hi there,

Keep an eye on it and if it doesn't clear up in a couple of days you should see the vet. How old is your cat? They can get some nasty problems with their gut and diarrhoea is sometimes the only symptom. Not wanting to worry you, because it's still rare, but we lost our 12 year old tabby to a lymphoma and all she had was a runny bum!

Here's to good health
