too much tuna?

After reading some of the comments on this forum I ordered some Porta21 and Cosmo Thai food from Zooplus. The contents of a can of each have been woolfed down by Trigger and Tiffany. So far so good.

But I am concerned to see that tuna forms a very high percentage of both foods, as I thought cats should not be allowed too much. Is it OK then to feed Porta and Cosmo every day?

Re: too much tuna?

my cats love tuna and has it a lot and i have never thought it would be a problem so i guess what you are doing is ok.

when i have had a kitty hard to ween i have been told by breeders who have been breeding for 25 plus years to try tuna so cannot be that bad if you can ween a kitten on it.

Re: too much tuna?

Can tuna be bad for kittens then? I've never heard this. My kitten wont eat any food other than fish with kitten biscuits mixed in, is this bad for her? I have only had her a week!

Re: too much tuna?

There is a risk from Tuna, basically tuna carry a higher level of mercury than other fish. The table below shows the American FDA recomendations for Tuna consumption in adults. Whilst the UK does't see much White Albacore tuna, we do have Chunk light, Yellow fin and Skipjack. The UK's advice to pregnant mothers is not to comsume more than 1 can every two weeks. Like most things there is not enough research to look at the risk to our pets

Eating Tuna Safely

This table provides guidelines on how much canned tuna it is safe to eat, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. While mercury poses the most serious health threat to children and women who are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, others may also wish to use this list as a guide.
If you weigh: Don't eat more than one can every:
White Albacore Chunk Light
20 lbs 10 weeks 3 weeks
30 lbs 6 weeks 2 weeks
40 lbs 5 weeks 11 days
50 lbs 4 weeks 9 days
60 lbs 3 weeks 7 days
70 lbs 3 weeks 6 days
80 lbs 2 weeks 6 days
90 lbs 2 weeks 5 days
100 lbs 2 weeks 5 days
110 lbs 12 days 4 days
120 lbs 11 days 4 days
130 lbs 10 days 4 days
140 lbs 10 days 3 days
150+ lbs 9 days 3 days
Source: Food and Drug Administration test results for mercury and fish, and the Environmental Protection Agency's determination of safe levels of mercury.
