Cool My 7 week old kitten seems to have trouble going to the toilet - please help!

Hi there,

Im new to this site but everyone seems really friendly so thought I would ask some advice. I got a bengal x tabby kitten at weekend. Its 7 weeks old been wormed and is settling in to our home well. The kitten 'Bailey' is eating wet food well and drinking plenty of water but seems to have trouble going for a number 2.

He doesn't seem to have a problem weeing and knows where his litter tray is but crys everytime he seems to be trying for a poo and since Sunday has only poo-ed once. It seems like he does need to go and his bottom smells a bit whiffy as if he needs to go but its just not happening. Has anyone else had these problems? Can anyone give me some advice pls? I am going to phone the vet today and get him booked in for check up etc but just concerned about him.

Also does anyone know if there is a flea treatment that you can safely use on 7 week old kittens? I noticed a flea on my kitten yesterday and don't think he has been treated yet.

Thanks

Emmlou x

Re: My 7 week old kitten seems to have trouble going to the toilet - please help!

Hi and welcome

I think it may be that Bailey is a little constipated because of the move - it's normal and happens all the time, when I got my kitten he didn't do a poo for three days. I took him to the vet for registration and at the same time he gave him a mild laxative to help him along. That did the trick..

Good thing that you're taking him to the vet just in case - it's probably nothing but good to rule out any infection etc.

Can't help with the flea treatment, but I'm sure someone will come along who can

Do you have some pictures of little Bailey to share?

why do you even have a *7 week old* kitten?

that is too young to be away from mum and in a new home, any good cat person or breeder wouldnt sell until 13/14 weeks old and after 2nd jabs.

Re: My 7 week old kitten seems to have trouble going to the toilet - please help!

i have heard on here a few times that people have brought 7-8 week old kittys not the person buying fault it is the breeder.

you can use front line flea spray for your kitty, put some gloves on and put some on to your hands then massage in to the cats coat but do not get it near eyes mouth.

i would pop him a long to the vets for a check up.

you could be using a different brand of food to the breeder so this maybe why he is a little bunged up.

i do have to say that most of my kittys would have not long gone on to solids and still at that age wanted there mums milk. could be why he is bunged up as well..

also the mum licks them around the lower parts and this encourages the kitten to poo and so will not be getting that help now.

You could try Bailey on some sardines in olive oil. Oily fish helps soften and lubricate no. 2s, plus cats and kittens love them, especially mixed in scrambled egg, like kitten kedgeree. It's a gentler way of getting things going than laxitives. A bit of goats yogurt with a bit of honey in it too, may help. Both foods are good for growing babies too.

Re: My 7 week old kitten seems to have trouble going to the toilet - please help!

We got our moggie at 9 weeks, from a friend. He was weaned and litter trained by then! The friend isn't a breeder, just probably not a v responsible pet owner as his cat hadn't been speyed and had had a litter of kittens which he wanted to rehome.

Fluffy had his first jab at the vets at about 9.5 weeks and he was treated with a spot treatment for fleas and worms at the same time (I was given it to put on that evening). I can't remember what it was called though - sorry! Best thing to do is ask the vets what they recommend.

He's now about 13 weeks and has had his 2nd jabs and is almost due for another flea/worm treatment - must go and buy some more from the vets!!!

Re: My 7 week old kitten seems to have trouble going to the toilet - please help!

Hi EmmaLou, Vixxen is right in that 7 wks is young to be leaving mum and most breeders would not allow kitten to leave until at least 13 wks, also should have had their injections which most vets won't do their 1st set until at least a healthy 9 wks old and 2nd injections at a healthy 11/12 wks old-giving breeder at least a week to make sure their are no adverse reactions etcThe breeder should also have flea'd and wormed kitten prior to leaving, for the stimulation part try a wet tissue and rub around his bum area,in a rough(not to rough)motion as if mum was licking, this is how mum would stimulate and encourage him to do his stuff. It can be a bit stressful for an older kitten leaving home, lots of changes and certainly for a 7 wk old kitt,so maybe try some sardines if he'll eat(something with a bit of oil will help with passing) and as you have been, lots of reassuring play and cuddles, and vigorous stroking of his head and body(again as mum would do),i would take him to your vet and get him checked over for him and for your peace of mindI'm sure Bailey will be just fine he just needs some extra tlc that he would have still been getting from mum,and that job now falls even more to you, good luck and let us know how you goSome pics of Bailey would be great when you can, sounds a sweetheart

Re: My 7 week old kitten seems to have trouble going to the toilet - please help!

Even though he's weaned in that he can eat solids, if he was still with his Mum he'd still be having milk feeds too, he's probably constipated poor little boy. Some oily fish as S suggested, also add some extra water to his wet food to increase his fluids. A wet diet will keep things moving better than dry, he is very young and his system is stll very immature. He will only have been eating solids in any real quantity for 2 - 3 weeks so not surprising his tum is struggling without help from Mum .
A vet check is a really good idea, vet will advise on fleaing and worming such a little kitten.
