Kidney failure in my cat
Hi All
My cattie had 5th trip to vet in 5 weeks on Tuesday, she has been increasingly lethargic & vomiting occasionally but eating / drinking normally. Vet a little concerned so took some blood. Got the blood test results back yesterday. Her reading for hyperthyroidism had dropped to less than 12 so Vidalta now prescribed at 10mg once daily rather than 15mg. However, an added complication is her kidneys are failing - lost 75 % function. We have no idea how long this has worsened over as not been tested for this in a couple of years, it had not been recommended. She has now been changed onto Hills prescription KD wet pouch diet. Has anyone any comments on how their cat has been on this diet ? I was rather surprised by the kidney issue - wasn’t expecting that so not had time to research this much so coming here first for your comments. |

Re: Kidney failure in my cat
All the Hills Prescription diets are good, if somewhat boring.
What was your cat eating and drinking when all this started and up to when the diet was changed? |

Re: Kidney failure in my cat
my boy Nikki had kidney problems but unfortunately he hated the food (tried dry, tinned and pouches) so had to feed him cooked chicken and low fat cottage cheese!! (this was the vets suggestion). hope your kittie does well on her diet.

Re: Kidney failure in my cat
As a bit of background:
My 15 yr old female cat has was diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism approx 18 months ago and now on Vidalta 10mg daily crushed in her food due to great difficulty in pill giving. The vet is Ok with this method as she had major ear problems as a kitten and had a double ear resection and in the past 2 years problems reoccurred with her ears and has a quick procedure carried out every 10 - 14 weeks to remove a persistent ear polyp – hence she HATES anyone touching her head and grasping her head to give a pill is a big no no. She also has a digestive problems and has only eaten Royal Canin sensitivity food diet for 3 years. I saw the vet last night after a day of severe vomiting for Cattie and they recommended going back on her previosu sensitivity control diet to see if this settlesteh vomiting as she has a history of digestive problems the Kidney diet may not agree with her. If it settles the vomiting then looks like they will prescribe drugs for her kidney disease but being in the middle of changing her hyperthyroidsim drugs is making things a little more difficult to check what is problem causing what symptom. She is happy in herself - still eating / drinking normally for her - playing and being sociable so she doesnt appear to be distressed at all. |

Re: Kidney failure in my cat
Well hasn't she done wonders to keep as well as she obviously does at that age?
Mine love the Royal Canin diets too and the Waltham and, to me, I think food is almost an only pleasure when older, so if she's happy eating the RC, I think you are quite right to leave her on that. I do hope she settles and has more happy years with you. Shielah |

Re: Kidney failure in my cat
Both my cats are on Royal Canin Veterinary diet for sensitive tummy's and they are only 1yrs and 2yrs, they love it wont eat anything else. They have a bowl of the dry biscuits at all times and a sachet of wet food at night each.
Ps Its expensive buying it from the vets, i get mine of this website its cheaper ... Welcome to Petmeds.co.uk - Pet Medication Supplies Hope this is helpful ![]() |

Re: Kidney failure in my cat
Im not impressed with the ingredient lists for Hills and certainly not royal canin either personally. I go for high meat content and as for dry food they are all full of maize and fillers that cause alot of the problems in the first place. I only know 2 dry foods that dont and you have to order them from the net which is what i do, my bengal suffered from a terrible tummy before i got her, she has not had any trouble since.

Re: Kidney failure in my cat
I do have Orijen here which I get from Zooplus, but I'm not sure you should feed such a high meat content to a 15 year old cat.
That's where I would follow my vets' advice, I think. |
