Dry Food Question

I am currently feeding my maine coon Pro Plan Adult because I have heard it is the best dry food out there but, as my cat is a maine coon, is it any better feeding him dry food specially formulated for his breed? I am considering Royal Canin Feline Health Maine Coon 31 but will not switch if it is no better or not as good for him as Pro Plan. Thanks.

Re: Dry Food Question

Hi there,

I've never bought in to the breed specific food that more and more companies seem to offer these days. For me, when it comes to nutrition, a cat is a cat is a cat They all have the same digestive system and the same nutritional needs - i.e. meat.

Although dry food in general is the least healthy food to eat for a cat, the best of the dry foods contain a high percentage of meat and a low percentage of other fillers such as rice, wheat, etc.

The two best dry foods available, regardless of breed, are Applaws and Orijen.

Re: Dry Food Question

The advantage of the RC Maine Coon food is that it is in bigger nuggets. Much better for a MC to chomp on. However, I would never recommend dry food due the the high level of fillers and potencial kidney related problems in cats due to the excess water that they have to drink

Re: Dry Food Question

Thanks for all your answers.

I did get a little bag of the MC dry food but he doesnt seem to like it anyway.
My other MC (who has now passed away) drank quite a lot of water and her kidneys were in perfect condition (we had her tested from head to toe, everything was in perfect condition and her kidneys being in tip top condition was quite a shock), even when she died at 15 (and she had diabetes for 4 years).

I certainly do not favour dry food as I said, I had a diabetic cat for 4 years, so I know how bad dried food can be, but we only give the dry food in complete moderation for the extra bit of goodness in the dry food that we cant get in his wet and as his dry is the only thing he seems most interested in at the moment, I really dont want him not to eat anything at all. We have tried him on all the best wet cat food available but he seems so incredibly fussy and either doesnt like them or doesnt like them for long!
