Kitten being speyed this week!

my 22 week old kitten is being speyed this Friday! roughly how long will she take to 'recuperate' & is there anything we need to do/know for when she comes home?

i have a fear that she will be pulling out her stitches when she gets home - I am slightly squeamish at the thought! will she be given a collar to wear?

thanks, MrsC xx

Re: Kitten being speyed this week!

I've found with mine, when they get back they are just as though nothing has happened. The day after they tend to sleep a bit more, but thats usually the stress of the previous day. After that just the same as always. Is she your only cat? If you have others or young children then you could make sure she has a safe haven where she can retreat with out being bothered if she wants to be somewhere nice and quiet.

Is she having a side spay or a midline ? With a side spay there's only a couple of stitches and the actual wound is usually quite small. Some vets seem to add a collar to the bill as standard, but I have never had one for mine, and never had an issue with the chewing their stitches - but then all cats are different. Once they have cleaned the area they are happy to leave it alone.

The worst bit is the waiting to call at lunchtime to make sure everything went OK.

Im sure she will be fine, the vet usually offers a collar but they don't always need it. Is she getting speyed on her flank or tummy, I find there can be more post op issues with scar tissue with a tummy op.They recover really quick with a flank spey and usually need less of a shave, just my humble opinion! I was also advised to use newspaper torn up as litter for straight afterwards! I went back to my normal litter after a couple of days!

best of luck, let us know how she gets on!

Izzie

Re: Kitten being speyed this week!

just an update! dropped Garcie off at the vets yesterday morning - she was NOT impressed with us! part of the reason being due to the lack of space in her carrier - we didn't realise just how much she had grown!

anyway, phoned the vets at 1.30pm & was told we could pick her up after 2 ... when we went down to get her, vet said the op had gone well & she was coping fine with the pain etc etc. got her home & its like nothing has happened - she was quiet for a couple of hours, lay on our bed & licked at her wound (I have a sore throat from telling her 'NO') but soon she was running about like usual... ...honestly, nothing will keep her down!

she was speyed on her flank - just the tiniest of scars & not too much shaved off. getting spoilt rotten at the moment & she's playing on it ... keeps coming up to us for cuddles!!!

xx

Re: Kitten being speyed this week!

Hello everyone, since this post is very similar i wont make a post and just reply here hoping ill get some help

Well our cat got speyed today and just returned home, vet said she might be abit of dizy and she might puke also.
Like 5 minutes after we let her out her cage she started crying alot and we can see she is in real pain. Also when we get close to her she gets agressive.

Although i believe its normal and she will get better tomorrow i would like to know if your cats acted the same.
