Am I feeding him too much food?

Just wanted to check as I don't want him becoming overweight!

Fluffy is now 11 weeks old and is eating 2 pouches of kitten food per day. I also leave a little dry food out whilst I'm at work which he sometimes nibbles on and sometimes leaves. At the mo he is having 1 pouch of Whiskas & 1 of Hi-life but I plan to switch over entirely to Hi-life & a bit of applaws when the Whiskas is used up.

I am giving a whole puch of Whiskas in the morning as we're out all day, then the Hi-life either in 2 halves or in one go later in the day. He literally wolfs that down and licks the bowl clean!

At 9 weeks he weighed about 1kg but I can tell he's grown loads. Is 2 pouches too much at this age or do you think if he's eating it all he must need it?

If he is eating it all with relish then he needs it I would say. It's practically impossible to over feed a growing kitten. They are growing so fast and are so active they need a lot of calories.

Re: Am I feeding him too much food?

Hi

I would say 2 - 3 puches is around normal. My boy is now 15 weeks old and he's on 2 - 3 a day. he was also 1kg when he got his jag at 9 wks and when he went back for 2nd jag he was 1.8kg! I don't think you can overfed as i have had the odd day Mikey wont eat as much as he did a previous day think it all depends on how active he's been all day hehe. xx

Fluffy is certainly active, unfortunately it mainly seems to be at night. He thinks it's hillarious to pounce on our feet under the duvet when we're in bed! I suppose we could shut him out but that seems a bit mean. This morning I woke up because I was being ticked by a tail - I discovered Fluffy curled up asleep right next to my head!

i have to admit my wee one is really good at bedtime. he runs about mad for 15 mins when i go to bed but then he'll come in and curl up and go to sleep most times he sleeps right through until 6.30 when alarm goes off on the odd occasion he wakes up around 5 and runs around on top of me and OH and i have to shut him out then but the's still learning. i sympathise with all those ones who cant get a wink of sleep cos of their fur babies.

Re: Am I feeding him too much food?

I would think it may not be enough - if he's eating it all very quickly he must be hungry. I'd suggest giving a 3rd pouch before you go to bed, he can then eat it overnight if he wants to.
Certainly an adult cat needs 3 pouches per day at least, and a growing kitten probably needs just as much. I think in general that cats don't overeat unless they get addicted to dried food (as many do!)

Re: Am I feeding him too much food?

We just give ours as much as they will eat... they have days where they eat loads and other days where they they don't eat as much. I was worried they were getting a bit chubby when I took them to the vets for their 2nd jabs, but she said they were fine and just growing.... Most places I've looked say that you can't overfeed a kitten and that they should have as much as they can eat.

Re: Am I feeding him too much food?

Hi there

im new to this forum but was interested in this topic. I have always had cats and never any feeding issues until now. I have two 3yr olds, both girls, one is quite lean and the other one is fat and a greedy guts!!

The greedy one cant get enough food and she eats alot of the the other ones food! to look at them you would think they were from 2 seperate homes they are like little and large!!!

I feed them a felix pouch each in the morning and again at 6pm, they do have a bowl of dry food but hardly ever touch it.

For the last few months they have both been begging for more food at about 9pm, i give them half a pouch each and this seems to satisfy them but they still moan for more, some days i give them another half pouch each (think they are trying it on!!)

I worm them twice a year although my vet told me once was enough as they are indoor cats.

what do you all think, if they ask for it feed them?

Re: Am I feeding him too much food?

I would take away their dry and try them on good quality wet - min 60% meat like hi life, natures menu or almo nature, it may help satisfy them more.

Food with not enough good quality protein and high in unnecessary carbs lead to blood sugar highs and lows.
