What should her gums look like whilst teething?

Hey everyone,

My kitten is now around 5 months old and she has been behaving a little odd, looking for lots of affection of us (more than ususal), making funny little noises then running round like a lunatic, she is also biting really hard, also her breathe is bad at the moment. Does that sound like teething?

She is eating properly but we took a look at her teeth today and her gums are red round the bottom of her back teeth and look a bit bloody, is that normal? Also earlier today she was like heaving, I thought she was going to be sick, and then pawing her mouth and tongue, is that normal????

Sorry guys, I've never had a kitten before and nothing really is coming up with a google search

Thanks

Sam

Re: What should her gums look like whilst teething?

hi Sam

yes, this sounds typical for a teething kitten. Sometimes they do have a lot of problems while getting their adult teeth, and clawing at the mouth isn't unusual - I've had several kittens do this and it's quite upsetting as they can damage their faces. You need to clip her claws as short as possible to limit the damage, perhaps use something like teething granules or gel to make it less painful. I've also used a small dose piriton in bad cases, although it's sold as a human allergy medication it does have a calming / sedative effect. If it gets really bad ask your vet for some sort of pain medication. Many vets don't realise that kittens can have teething problems but they certainly can.
On the plus side it shoudl only last a couple of weeks at the most, until the teeth are through.
