Timmy
Hi All
Just joined this forum as we need some advice. We have had our cat Timmy for approx 14 years now, he just turned up in the garden one lovely summers day and decided he wanted to live with us. He has had the usual scrapes that cat have, one with a passing taxi that nearly killed him a number of years back, it left him blind in one eye, but at least the taxi driver took him to the vets. This was not long after we took him in and he didn't have a collar on or a microchip, so after some frantic phone calls around the local vets after he didn't come home, we traced him. Needless to say he was chipped straight away and he became one of the most spolied and loved cats you could ever meet, he is an absolute star. In March lst year he started to get some nasty discharge from his damaged eye so it was decided that it had better be removed, this didn't seem to bother him too much. However, it was at this time that the vet told us that his good eye had a degenerative disorder that would eventually mean he would lose his site in his good eye. Well, this is what happened last week just after the New Year, the vet has told us to see how he goes on around the house, he is barely coping. My wife is on the sick at the moment and is looking after him, we can't get any sleep because he just walks around the house all night crying, bumping into things, he can't eat properly, he is having trouble getting his head in his bowls, his head bobs about, up and down. This breaking our hearts the thought of leaving him on his own all day whilst we are at work and he can't even look out of the window. We were wondering if anyone on this site has had a similar thing happen to their cat and how did the cat cope? We are taking him back to the vets tomorrow, but we don't know what will be said this time. Any advice would be much appreciated. David & Linda |

Re: Timmy
If at all possible, in the kitchen area, block it off with a gate that can be opened and closed and leave his food and water /litter box in there for him while you are out. and the same for at night. so sorry about your baby, and yes he is a star!

Re: Timmy
welcome.
Sad situation with Timmy. Sounds hard with possibly a hard decision to come - he may adjust to the blindness or he may possibly have other problems too. Good luck and thinking of you.

Re: Timmy
Hi
Many thanks for your kind thoughts. I quess we both really knew what the best thing for Timmy was. He has been really miserable this week since he lost his sight in his one good eye, crying and wandering about bumping into things, he was so frightened, it was heartbreaking to watch. Well he was booked into the vets for 17:00 hrs today, so we have spent the day giving him lots of hugs and treats, the only way he felt safe enough to sleep was in our arms like a baby. That last time putting him in his box and loading him in the car was the hardest thing I have had to do. I have to say our vet was brilliant, he had a final look in his eye to see if there was any way to save some sight but there was none. We couldn't stay around to watch so everything was prepared, we gave him a final hug and said goodbye and left him in the hands of a lovely vet and veterinary nurse and left, with that empty box. He will have a seperate creamation and we will get his ashes back some time next week, once this cold weather breaks he will be buried in the shade of his favourite tree. We are heartbroken now, but time is a healer, we can look back on all of the good times, funny times. Cats are brilliant, once you gain their trust their love is very special, we couldn't have asked for a better cat to come into our lives all those years back. It has been a privilage to look after him. R.I.P Timmy, we miss you loads. Take it easy cat lovers |
