Calicivirus
The reason I am not having the girls tested for FHV (herpes virus) is that about a year ago, I had kittens with snuffles and sticky eyes. I had two of them tested for FHV/FCV and Chlamydia. The test results were negative to both FHV and Chlamydia but positive for FCV. As the FHV test is rather expensive, I chose to only test for FCV this time round. Once we have a result, we will know whether to test again for FHV and Chlamydia.
I had a chat with the vet who wasn't my usual vet. She told me there was no need to rehome any of the cats at present and that I ought to give the girls a rest for now, i.e. not to breed for at least 6 months but preferably longer so that they can have time to elimanate the virus or at least build up sufficient antibodies to it. I am afraid I have conflicting information regarding that suggestion. Another vet told me that kittens will still fall victim to the virus regardless of mum's antibodies. I just don't know what to believe.
I phoned Glasgow Uni small animal department for advice and they were unhelpful and referred me back to my vet - great!! Today I hope to speak to a lady at FAB who knows about viruses. I also would really like to speak to Professor Tim Gryffdd-Jones at Bristol Uni who would give me the best advice but I don't think I will get past his secretary if he has one!!!! He is a busy man.
My other 3 kittens who are now 15 days old are showing no signs of illness. Believe it or not, I have a footbath with Virkon solution just outside the bedroom door so that not even one particle of the virus can get in.
Sheer paranoia has set it now. I simply love these babies and will do anything to protect them.
