How to ease the pain of a long journey for cats?
Hi, we need to make about a 5-6 hour car journey
with our two cats who have hysterics during the 5 minute trip to the vets. I'm not sure if there is anything that you can do to sedate them? Do you know? I don't want to harm them in any way but I think it would be better for them as they really, really hate travelling in the car for 5 minutes let alone 5 hours. Please help!

You could try rescue remedy in their water and spray feilway onto there bedding etc.I would phone your vet and explain and see if there is anything they might be able to give them good luck

Re: How to ease the pain of a long journey for cats?
I had a look on google and people seem to say Feliway.
My two are horrendous when I take them to the vets and mioaw the place down, when we had to move when our house was being renovated they were crying and sticking their paws out of the front of the carrier, so I know what you mean. When I take them to the vets the whole bus ends up looking at them, however everyday when I come home from work i see others with their cats going / coming from the vet and their cats sit in their box really well behaved...... but my two! ![]() |

Feliway is rubbish. Well, never calms my cats on journeys! I have to take my moggie on a 3.5hr trip in 2 weeks and then again the next day back home. She is not used to travelling. I know people give their cats certain medicines but i suggest u ask your vet!

Hi OK will ask the vet, that seems to be the general consensus. I guess he will just say just let them miaw the whole way but you never know. Thanks for your advice

I find mine are better in a large pen, with a tray and space to move around, than they are in a small carrier. Much more comfy for them and if you cover it over with a blanket they feel safe too.

I was wondering about this - one is okayish - settles after 20 mins but the other is awful. would you put the two in together?

Re: How to ease the pain of a long journey for cats?
Depends on the cat, you could trial it. I used to take Poppy to shows with Theo. They slept together inside got on really well at all times, until you put them in a pen together. Poppy seemed to think the travesty was Theo's fault and would swear at him for the first 10 mins or so, but she did settle. She was the only one who behaved like that though, everyone else travels together quite happily.
There is no second guessing them really, the only way to know is to try it.
