Not sure if it will help, but have a look at this page for information on travelling with cats. I spoke to my vet about this once and he gave me some brilliant advice, but it was YEARS ago!

Archie goes crazy in a cat box. But on the way home from the vets we tried just letting him sit on my partners lap instead and he loved it. He sat up with paws on the dashboard watching everything. I guess he's too bleeding nosey!
I reckon if the window was down he'd stick his head out like a dog... However, I wouldn't recommend this on your own in the car as the cat will try and get under your pedals!!!!
