Worms affecting kitten skin

Warning: Pictures arent for the faint at heart.

Hey guys.

We have 4 kittens. All had general worm treatment, but about 2 months ago one of the females had a raw patch of skin appear, a friend said it was round worm. It literally looked like a fleshy version of a really bad carpet burn.

Eventually that healed and shes been fine since. Then today, the day after my little man was neutered, I discovered the same thing on his neck.

I've taken a photo (below). Ideally I don't want to take him to the vet for it, because it will clear up like hers did. What I wondered is can anyone recognize the worm it could be so I can treat the other kittens before they get it?

p.s he's not in any discomfort for it, he's actually 100% despite his operation yesterday, she was the same to, didn't seem to cause her any pain, it just dried up. If I could tell he was in pain, I'd take him tp the vets.

Re: Worms affecting kitten skin

I don't think that looks like worms? Ring worm can look like bald scaly patches, but it's a fungus infection not really a worm. Round worms live in their guts .
It looks like a skin infection, it looks festery. Any chance they've been fighting and broken the skin with their teeth? Very easy for even tiny shallow wounds like that to get infected, cat's mouths are really dirty. If it IS infected it needs antibiotics.

Re: Worms affecting kitten skin

Have you been using the flea or worming treatments that you apply to the back of the neck? Could this have caused it. xxx

Re: Worms affecting kitten skin

It's definetely not from playing, as the female had the same thing in a different place, plus they don't play that violently.

I think its definetely round worm. I will treat them all again. See how Sams skin is after a week, take him to the vets if it hasn't healed.

I remember how horrified I was when I first saw it on our female, but within a day it was dry and fading and within a fortnight the fur was almost fully back.

Hi,

Yes i agree.....the first thing that came to mind was that you Had used a spot on treatment on the back of their necks...it is common for some cats to have a bad reaction to this and lose fur....it does look awfully sore like a type of burn from chemicals.

roundworms live in the guts, intestines and cause damage internally, not externally.you will need to clean and treat the sore area to prevent infection which could lead to blood poisoning.Ring worm is bacterial, not parasitic(no live critters)

Heres a timeline:

2 months ago: Random patch appears on Chynas side
1 month 3 weeks ago: We treat every kitten for worms with a spot on the back of the neck
1 month 2 weeks ago: Chynas skin reacts, like you guys have said, and she gets a second patch where the spot on goes
1 month ago: Chynas fully healed up, furs pretty much grown back
Today: Sam gets a patch on his neck.

Its got to be ring worm, it wouldn't have taken the spot on that long to cause a problem.

I'm surprised the vets didn't notice it :/ but his furs quite thick.

p.s sorry I keep getting ring and round worm mixed up, yano what I mean.
