Cat we are getting has cat flu - after he is treated can he still pass it on?
We are getting a kitten next week who we have just been told - has cat flu, he is on anti-biotics and what ever medicine he needs. It is quite bad though as he needs an eye removed! Poor little thing huh!
Anyway, we already have two cats. Im concerned that if we get this little one, he may still be a carrier and pass it onto one of my cats? Anyone any idea? |

Re: Cat we are getting has cat flu - after he is treated can he still pass it on?
Hi
Do you know which strain it is??? Herpesvirus is awful but calici isn't as bad and most cats can clear it and then go on not to be carriers. Most cats are contagious for 75 days after they first contract cat flu, and then they stop shedding the virus and as long as they are fed well and stress free, they should be able to rid themselves of it. Even if your other cats are vaccinated, it is no guarantee that they are protected as the vaccination isn't active against every strain. If he has had to have an eye out, I would be quite concerned to be honest as he has obviously had a really bad time of it and then to have to go into a new home with other cats to contend with, could prevent him from getting better. I would certainly sit back and consider your options a little Lou X |

It has put a bit of a spanner in the works. On the day of his op, he is meant to be travelling to see us, this would mean he would be in a car for about 3 hours. Then bought into our house, but kept in a room by himself for a few days. I really ont know what to do. He is a rescue kitten, the lady who was meant to be looking after him - didnt! The cats protection is full where he lives.

Do not take him under any circumstances. Best advice is to work to help the lady place him with some kind person who adopts only viral cats.

Re: Cat we are getting has cat flu - after he is treated can he still pass it on?
I would ask your vet about it, give them all the details and ask them their opinion on the risk to your current cats. If your two current cats are vaccinated then they may develop mild flu symptoms IF he is a carrier, and no one can really answer that, or they may not. If this poor little soul has had to have an eye removed that sounds more like the poor thing was left untreated for period of time, and his current predicament could well have been avoided. Herpes virus is the one that stays in the system and the cat can develop symptoms in times of stress, but again if that happens that may or may not affect a fully vaccinated cat.
This poor kitten does sound like he really needs a loving home who can take care of him, especially after his op.

Re: Cat we are getting has cat flu - after he is treated can he still pass it on?
Hello people im timmytheos or whatever name she has sister!
Its me who has the kitten now and can hopefully explain a little better The kitten is 6 months old, ive had him with his sister for 2 days now, the lady i got him from said she got the kttens from cats protection - after enquiring with them it turns out they have been after her for a while as she has done this before and doesnt look after the cats well at all. She has been reported and new address given by me The lady lives near me but doesnt have electric so only has candle lights - ive been round to see the cats (she hd 13 - now 11) So i couldnt see his eyes proberly, after getting him into mine where i have lighting I had a good look at his eyes and suspected flu - she said it was a cataract, i took him tot he vest this morning with his sister to be snipped. The vet was shocked and quite angry - not at me but her about his eye. He said it was cat flu but without taking a sample couldnt tell what strain it was. As the cat is now going through the cats protection i have to OK it with them before he could take a sample and send it away for testing. The cats are both on Ronaxan 20mg and have to have 1.5 once a day Both cats are due to go back to the vets on Friday for neuturing and he has to have his eye removed, he cant use the eye so theres no point it being there anyway. The vet also said that if things are better by Friday he is ok to be rehomed, if not then he can stay here for a little bit longer. My sisters cats (the home he is possibly going to) havent been vaccanated so the risk IS higher of them contracting cat flu. The virus should only be in his system for 5 days and im hopign he isnt goign to be carrier - if not looks like im getting a cat! His sister is fine, no symptoms as yet - but couldnt have surgery as risk of infection is higher. Im so angry at this woman, she has another cat there who she has said is blind - but its car flu, they will all have it by now! |

Re: Cat we are getting has cat flu - after he is treated can he still pass it on?
I agree Ang, I will speak to the vet and see what he says on friday.
What might be best is for me to come down with female and sort her home out but leave Phil up here. Only untill he is 100% in the clear He really is a sweety - they are both curled up asleep in a odd ball. They have wrecked the dog crate - a great game seems to be hide under news paper until the other walks past and attack!! But yeah let me speak to the vets and see what he says - if theres any risk i wont bring him down, not wirth rsking your 2 boys. I would be happy yo keep him ehre for a bit - he is going to have a pretty nasty operation - poor boy. Ive got some more pictures so will email you them and ive taken some of his face incase RSPCA want to file charges against her - which i think they should do! x x x |

Re: Cat we are getting has cat flu - after he is treated can he still pass it on?
He is a por little mite. As soon as we know what strain it is - that would be good. If he was ok for friday you could bring him and keep him in the quiet at mums in your room with the door closed? I dunno. Speak to vet - see what he says.
When i got Tim - didnt he have cat flu? |

Re: Cat we are getting has cat flu - after he is treated can he still pass it on?
Yeah timmy had cat flu as well but we caught it early so he wasnt harmed too much by it.
I would keep them at mums but because of the other 3 and the way they are at the moment would rather not risk it. If push comes to shove i'll ask Nige, if i bring the dog crate up with me and stuff. Am waiting for the cats protection to give me a call back now so hopefull thy can help - what i might have to do is as someone at cats protection to foster him for a few days while im away - then bring him up in Jan. BUT thats not going to be the best plan! |
