Re: rescue cat or new kitten?

I guess if you do decide to get another cat you could go and see who is at the local rescue, find out about them and ask the staff their what they think.....failing that, just go with your instincts

I always thought that kittens were easier to integrate with older cats, they are more ready to accept a younger cat.

That may or may not be true. However the OP said that she was about to go out to work all day. IMHO I don't think it would be fair to a young kitten to leave it all day even with an older companion cat.

Kittens need lots of attention and regular small meals.

I know they grow up quickly but I do think that the human has to think about how long the kitten is left on its own - if working full time could be 8 hours minimum and maybe longer.

If neutered at the right age (5-6 months) the male shouldn't spay as never got into that habit.

If you are rescueing then check with the staff - they should know if there are any spaying problems.

Re: rescue cat or new kitten?

I had a beautiful Siamese cat who was desperately lonely, as she needed constant attention, so we got her a tiny kitten. She mothered it immediately, but unfortunately it died. She again became lonely so we got her a new cat (six months old) but they never really befriended each other they way she would have liked as this cat was a stray that didn't like to be stroked etc.

So we got her another kitten and after a week she tried to mother it too, but this cat isn't the type that needs lots of attention, although they did get on well and she did settle.

If you do get one, make sure it is one that needs lots of attention and is very affectionate. My cats were all girls. However, I lost my Siamese last year and took in a boy stray in May and the two girls just accepted him into the house without any fuss.
