PetPlan Insurance for Rehomed Cats

I rehomed a cat directly from the breeder back in the summer of last year. Just before Christmas I noticed a couple of lumps on her underside and took her to the vets to be checked. The vet was concerned that they may be cancerous and so advised to have surgery to remove them. Thankfully they were benign but there were over a dozen of them.

I put a claim into my vets on the 29th December. Around the 20th January PetPlan contacted me to ask why there was no medical history, and my husband informed them that she was a "rescue" cat.

On Monday I was at the vets with one of my other cats and mentioned that the claim had still not been paid so he looked it up. PetPlan had closed the claim. He re-opened it (I didn't know they could do that but apparently they can). I requested an update via their online tracking system and received a text saying "we have received your claim and will contact you within 10 days", so I called them. I was informed by the lady that they will not pay any claims unless they have a full medical history. I explained that she was rehomed by us but they are insistant that they need her history.

Her previous owner and I are now good friends (she is a breeder of MC's which is how I met her), and she also registers all of her cats at the same vets as me. The problem is that she registers her kittens as kitten 1, kitten 2, kitten 3, etc and so the vets are saying that they have no history of her (even though I'm sure they managed to look her up before and her vaccination card has her (old) name on it!).

I'm going into the vets to have a chat with them at the weekend and will take her vaccination card with me. I know that MeMe's previous owner will be happy to have her records signed over to me (if there are any), but I'm just worried that the vets won't be able to find her records and/or PetPlan won't pay out.

Has any one had any experience like this? What is the point in insurancing "rescue" pets if the insurance insist on a full previous medical history?

Re: PetPlan Insurance for Rehomed Cats

Hi

This sounds odd - but I think it is the vets rather than PetPlan.

Is MeMe microchipped? - If so, the vet would be able to track her medical records through from 'K1,K2' to MeMe and then attach the medical records to her now.

I adopted from Cats Protection, and the records were passed to me/my vet at the point of adoption, so I am surprised - especially as to offer the insurance, the breeder should have only been able to insure her at the point of adoption if there were full records (because they have to declare pre-existing conditions.)

I'm sure the vet can resolve it with some imagination.

She is microchipped but I had that done when she came to live with me.

She was almost 2 years old when she came to me so I didn't get the breeders insurance that you normally get with kittens (I have subsequently got kittens from the same breeder and have all of the normal paraphernalia that comes with them).

I think maybe the lady from the vets that I spoke to earlier just somehow missed her on her records. I'm pretty certain that her vaccination records (which I have) show her correct name - which is her registered name rather than her pet name. Is that likely to confuse things?

Perhaps.

Maybe the vets have her registered in her old name, and old address, and when you registered her at the vet with the new name and your address it all became disjointed. If you have both sets of info, the vets should hopefully be able to match it all up

When I got home I checked her vaccs card and she's registered with a different vet. I've emailed the breeder and will ask for her records to be transferred). Its still all in her pedigree name but maybe there will be some records somewhere to show that she is the same cat.
