Living with a cta with Herpes - Advice Please

I will start by saying that it is my friends cat not any of mine !!! We test our cats and they are all free from that i am about to talk about !!

Ok my friend has taken on a cat recently which could possibly have one of three problems (tests at the labs now to find out which one)

Herpes
chachi
chlamydia

The cat is being treated for her sore eyes, runny nose sneezing etc and is doing well on the medication from the vet. However my friend is very concerned about what the future holds for her.

She is worried that if it is Herpes that her cat will have it for life and that potentially she could pass it on to her friend’s cats from her own clothes, shoes, hair etc if she comes in to contact with well any other cat. Also if any of her friends visit she is worried that they will take the virus home to their cats.

Also the possibility of not being able to put her in a cattery should an emergency happen and she has to leave her.

Does anyone on here have a cat with Herpes and if so what advice can you offer her about the possibility of living with a cat that has it

we are all preying for the cats sake it isn't but there is a one in three chance that it is so i would like to offer my friend as much advice as possible and having never had a cat with it or even a carrier of it i am hoping someone on here can help

Thank you all in advance

Julie

Re: Living with a cta with Herpes - Advice Please

I had a raggie that I had to rehome as an only cat. He suffered from Herpes and would occasionally get very bad flare ups. Its triggered by stress and he hated being in a multi cat home. He's now a single cat and he is fine. During this time Kalle and Kyrre arrived.

After Beau left Kaisa and Karlo arrived and within days went down with eye problems which in the event was chlamydia. Kalle and Kyrre went down with it as well. I'm pretty sure we tested one of each pair [if not all of them] and no one had herpes.

Beau used to get terrible conjuctivitus [worst eye vet had ever seen] and when it was bad he used to have famvir, ronaxan [i think] eye cream ans lysine. However if we noticed his eyes weeping we would immediately start him on the cream and this would stop it quickly.

Don't know about cattery as always have a pet sitter.

Thank you cazzer for your reply

Thankfully my friend only has this one cat and has no intension of having any more. This is made easier in that the cat is very very happy to be on her own

Her eyes are a million times better since being on an eye cream from the vets and having some antibiotics .

You mention Lysine, funny that you have as i mentioned to her yesterday to get some as i read somewhere it helps but couldn't find a dosage? How much did you give your cat Beau?

I will mention the pet sitter idea instead of a cattery as this may be a much better solution rather than stressing her out by going in to a cattery

Did you worry about transferring the virus to any of your friends cats if you visited them ? Only as i have cats my friend is very worried that she will bring the virus around to my home on her clothes, shoes etc . Did you find any issues with anything like that ? and when people with cats visited you, did yu have any kind of protacal?

I know i have asked some odd questions but these are the questions my frined has asked me and i am so unsure of the answers

Thanks again for your reply

When the virus is 'active' the dose is 500mg daily ( L-Lysine) and 250 as a maintenance does. If it's Calici then Lactoferrin is better.

If your own cats are vaccinated then they should be OK though it's wise to be cautious during flare-ups just in case. Mine have never contracted anything.

Thank you so much

all of our cats are vaccinated and like you ours have never contracted anything.

My friend is just so worried about the possibility of her or her cat giving it to someone elses. SHe is a house cat so i think as long as she keeps her happy and she doesn't have any flare ups then she should be ok
