I also suspect she damaged something during surgery. While I was at the vet with her during her last minutes my husband was at home and phoned 2 specialist who both said that this is most likely what happened... that something was damaged and her body went into shock...
But by the time my husband called to tell me what they said, it was too late
If this is the case then something like this would definitely show up in a necropsy. Originally I assumed the breathing was heart-related and a 'condequence' of the anaesthetic. Must admit hadn't paid too much attention to the very harrowing part of her last few moments. Upsetting.

Lovely little girl. I'm so sorry.

She was beautiful. I'm so so sorry. This will take a while to get over, I know. I woke up for weeks and weeks after the kittens died, hearing them cry in pain. It's very haunting. And I didn't watch them being born, so you have an extra level of bonding. Big cyber hugs.

This is the kind of thing that makes me nervous about early spaying--and please don't take this the wrong way. It's totally the right thing to do, for so many reasons, but there are always risks with surgery and unfortunately vets are human and I worry about the smallness of everything--if they aren't exceptional vets, it just seems so easy to bungle something. But again probably 999 times out of 1000, everything goes fine because it is a basic routine surgery. So, try not to blame yourself. You did the right thing by your kittens. I think your vet unfortunately just happens to be more interested in making a buck than caring for animals.

Re: Death of kitten caused by Vet?

What a thoroughly horrible thing to happen, and what an unprofessional, careless attitude your vet has. Do have a post mortem performed by one of the vets your husband called and do file a complaint against the vet.
It will not bring poor Moonshadow back, but at least it may prevent this sorry excuse fo a vet from doing any more harm to any more kittens.....

Re: Death of kitten caused by Vet?

Hmm.....Actually thinking about this.... accidental damage to organs during surgery would cause internal bleeding and this should show up on an X-ray and definitely an ultrasound, though both depend on the skill of the person interpreting them. Also there would be signs in the bloodwork and definite signs pain on palapating the abdomen. Now having looked at the list of medications/procedures it's not clear how extensive either of these tests were or when they were carried out-a blood smear suggests to me that it would only testing for a few things eg glucose. Think you need to clarify all this with the vets and also ask them to explain the findings of the u/s for example.

Having said all this at the end of the day this little kitten should have been observed more closely than appears to have been the case.

Lulus mum is on a distinguished road
Re: Death of kitten caused by Vet?

Read your post with great sadness

Please dont beat yourself up about this-hindsight is a great thing
(I put off taking Lulu our collie cross to the vets the night she died -we were going to take her the next morning.
She died that night with her head on my knee.
I still think of what would have happened if I had taken her)

What has happened to you wasnt your fault
You trusted your vet and he let you down in a big way.

I hope you get some answers from the "vet"

Sending you BIG HUGS
Hope Yuki is doing well-we have all taken him to our hearts

Maureen

I know Moonshadow will have many friend welcoming her at Rainbow Bridge and that she will be looking down on he mum with love

Re: Death of kitten caused by Vet?

Please don't beat yourself up over this - this was NOT YOUR FAULT. It's awful that your grieving for this little girl but you shouldn't blame yourself in any way. It does seem to smack of neglect on the vet's part. You did your damndest to get Moonshadow some help/treatment and they were very slow to take on board what you were telling them. Can only echo the advice re submitting a formal written complaint into the practice - if you get no reply within say two weeks perhaps consult a solicitor for advice. In the UK some solicitors will give you an hour's free advice - not sure if that is the same in S Africa but may be worth considering if you don't get any apology from the practice.

We all know how you kept and cared for Yuki so we know you love your animals. I hope Yuki is feeling better.

Thinking of you at this very tough time.
