My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

He is only 6 but he's a ragdoll & it can be genetic, we never knew.

He's been on a drip & is having a tablet from the vet a day. He's alert & eating & drinking.

I've done so much research for extra info.

Has anyone been through this & know other options to try?

I'm worried about toxins in this body which the vet hasn't mentioned any treatment for.

They took blood & urine tests. They tested for urea, his creatinine number was 800 which is seriously high. The vet automatically said he has a few months to live if he isn't treated. He said to take him the next day for IV. A different vet saw him who gave him a Sub-Q instead. My dad questionned it the next day & the first man (who owns the surgery) said he left instructions so doesn't know why she did something different & he then put my cat on a drip all of thursday.

He seems different every hour. Last night he was jumping around, today he looks a little miserable but he is eating well.

We're seeking second opinions but I seem to read a lot of "success stories" about cats living much longer & it seems to be the owners who know more about what to do so I'm trying to find as much help as possible.

Re: My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

Hi Lisa and welcome,

Sorry to hear about your cat. Do you know if it's acute or chronic renal failure? Or is it PKD? How high were the kidney readings The reason I ask is because the former can be caused by infection or indeed toxins and in the case of infection for instance once it's cleared completely the renal perameters invariably return to normal.

The vest definitive source of information on renal failure is Tanya's site if you haven't discovered it already.

There's also a forum ( linked to above ) I'd highly recommend you join right away-an excellent source of advice and information from people with years of experience in this field.

Re: My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

Just seen your second post. A creatinine of 800 is very high indeed and could very well point to infection. Incidentally this doesn't always show up in a urine sample. Has he ingested any lilies or anti-freeze? If this is the case then the prognosis is more guarded though it all depends on how quickly he received medical intervention.

I would certainly recommend a good few days or even longer on IV fluids in a case like this. Is he still at the vets? You're right to think positive as many of the cat's on Tanya's forum started with levels like this and with fluids and treatments managed to get them considerably lower. In fact you won't know the outcome until you try!

Re: My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

Hi, i have the readings infront of me now:

Alkp - 21
Alt - 54
Urea - 46.4 (should be 5.7-12.9)
Crea- 814 (should be 71-212)
Glu- 6.29
Tp - 92

We were told its severe so i presume chronic. They said it is terminal.

I wasn't at the vet so I dont understand all of these readings. From the papers its the urea, creatanine & tp that are high.

I have read numerous times that once the cat has been hydrated the numbers can change dramatically, the vet never said this. He is going to do a checkup in 2 weeks, i just thought they would check the numbers straight after he was on IV.

I have got lots of good info from that site, thank you. I hadn't seen the forum so I will join now, thank you.

He was on a drip all day thursday but has been home since. Every story ive read says the cat was on a drip for 3/4 days. Our vet said 1 day was enough. Im just feeling iffy that all these stories suggest longer & the vet doesnt seem to consider longer than one day...

He is home with us now. The vet said one day on IV is long enough but every single story ive read says 3/4 days. No he has not been near lillies or anti freeze, nothing unusual.

Re: My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

Severe initial readings don't necessarily mean it's chronic ( though some acute cases can become chronic if there's residual damage ) which is the form seen in older cats due to kidney degeneration. In fact most often these high readings indicate acute failure which is more likely given his age-terminal yes if no treatments or fluids are instigated and a lot can be done to slow the progress of both. How long was he poorly before he saw the vet? Do you have the while cell results?

You need to ask your vet what the inciting cause is. If you're sure about the lilies and anti-freeze then I would suspect infection-in which case it needs to be aggressively treated, or PKD-you'd need an ultrasound to confirm or exclude this though the physical examination by vet could give a good indication. Kidney stones of course are another possiblity.

If your in the UK then I'm afraid most vets have a very gloomy outlook with renal issues ( though your vet might just be cautious ) and the first thing you need to do is find one who is more proactive. I know they can recommend one on Tanya's forum. I hope he's still on IV fluids?

Re: My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

couldn't agree more there you will need to fish around for a good vet you will treat it properly many will just suggest pts and that is a last resort i lost my childhood cat fluffy to kidney failure but his was very different it happened in the space of a week and he ahd to be pts but if i had known then the things i know now i would of caught it like yourself. keep positive and find a vet that will treat it aggressively without hesitation
