Re: My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

I would also go for acute over chronic, but they can be bimbling along getting very slowly but progressively worse, with rather vague symptoms until they sort of reach a point of no return and have a renal crash. That happened to my parents' cat. On the other hand, my sister's 10-year-old suddenly developed renal failure and didn't survive it... thanks to a vet who did absolutely nothing at all to help her. I don't have the heart to tell my sister her cat could have been saved
Anyway, your puss looks well on the road to recovery and if it was acute, it is reversible and he has a better chance of making a full recovery.

We've just spoken to the vet.

They've done another blood test today, his creatinine has come down from 850 to 640, she wants to try to bring it down to 400-500 which she said would be ok for him. The urea reading has gone up but she said that was ok. He has also put on 1kilo which is good as he had lost more than that in the few days before.

On a bad note he is now anaemic & she said he was very depressed today. They're going to treat that so the chances are we'll get him back Monday. We'll need to do two Sub-Q's twice a week, I'm nervous as I'll be doing that.

I'm so desperate to have him back I miss my boy terribly.

Thanks for the update Lisa.

So pleased that his creatinine is heading in the right direction, hope it continues that way. And putting some of his weight back on is very good news.

It is scarey having to inject, but it is only under the skin, I believe, and you will soon get the hang of it.

Hope all goes well for Monday.

Re: My cat has been diagnosed with kidney failure

i have to say i am getting to the point where i no longer really trust vets! my little boy has been on fortekor for, oh it must be around 6 years now. then he was diagnosed diabetic end of last year and he has been taken off it. they said his levels are fine! yes, probably because he has been on it! now the dilema is what to i do, feed him for his diabetes (just protein) or for his kidneys? i am opting now for his diabetes as i think if i can get that under control then his health will improve (i hope)

i hope you get your little one back home tomorrow safe and sound
