Re: Please help. Very poorly cat.
Ianthi, thanks for your reply and encouraging words. I've read up on the medical terms you mentioned.
The vet we use is local to us, the only other establishment I know of is a large 'pets at home' a few miles away which has a surgery within. Perhaps it's worth a 2nd opinion with them? Some good news this evening at least, on my way home I picked up some Sheba food and some proper cat milk (low lactose) also some IAMS biscuits. She seems to really like the Sheba and ate about 1/6 of a small tray and licked the top of the rest in the tin. We have managed to continue administering water via a syringe and also the cat milk. And a couple of times she has actually taken water from a bowl on her own, and I also caught her eating some of the biscuits. This is really encouraging. Can't tell you how upsetting the prospect of losing her is. If you think Pets at Home are trustworthy/recommended then we will try them tomorrow. We are doing an all-nighter tonight to monitor her and cater to her needs when she's not resting. Again thanks to all. Your continued advice very much appreciated and gratefully received. Even now I can hear her lapping water in the kitchen. |

Reposting the following as didn't seem to go thru last night...

While I'm glad to hear she's managed to eat something, there's absolutely no point in faffiing around with different mainstream foods which are most likely exascerbating the problem anyway. This will not get better on it's own-in fact I've no doubt it will get worse without any veterinary intervention, medication and treatments. Please get her to a vet today. The RCVS website has a list. The accredited ones are generally better. Find a Vet - RCVS Animal Owners |

Re: Please help. Very poorly cat.
Update.
We returned to the same vet today (who is actually accredited) and this time I was there in person to meet the vet, who I respect totally and was as thorough as any vet could have been I imagine. Antibiotics were administered and a blood sample was taken, the results of which were phoned through within a couple of hours. From the blood test the results were as follows: Red blood cells (normally 30 to 50%) were 18% White blood cells normal Organs - Kidneys normal Liver slightly elevated In summary quite anaemic We also bought some 'hills' high calorie food which she readily ate, albeit hand-fed. Booked in for another antibiotics session on sat morning. The plan is to see how she fares with this treatment and hopefully we can build her strength back up a bit too with continued assistance re feeding. Next step after that would be x-rays and scan. |

Re: Please help. Very poorly cat.
I am glad you are making some progress with her.
My 3 are registered with the vets at P@H, and I have nothing but praise for them. Like anywhere, you will get good vets, and bad vets, but dont let the fact they are based in P@H put you off. Every single staff member I have seen has been wonderful, and even if I only have an appt with the nurse for something routine, if she is worried or unsure she gets the vet to come in, and he arrives immediately. Just wanted to put that in case you do want a 2nd opinion, and the fact they are in P@H was putting you off. I hope your kitty continues to make progress, and you dont need a 2nd opinion ![]() |

18% is actually quite severe anaemia and will need to be treated. Anaemia can actually kill so it sounds as if you've got it in the nick of time. Just to get this in perspective 13% requires a blood tansfusion. No wonder she had problems with balance, was lethargic and wasn't eating. Poor little cat. Appears vet may feel the inciting cause is infection ( antibiotics ) though strange white blood cells are normal. How was her temperature? However, you will need to establish the exact cause as there are a few. Vitamin B12 injections can help as a deficiency can be a cause. Keep an eye on her breathing as well as more rapid breathing could indicate a worsening of the condition.Very glad to hear there's a treatment plan and I truly hope she responds quickly and begins to turn a corner now. |
